Hey.
I taught in Korea for three years, came to Japan for eight months and now I want to head back to Korea. My job in Japan wasn't nearly as good as was advertised and frankly, I'm just not a fan of being a human tape recorder and always worrying about whether or not I'll have enough money to get to the end of the month. ESL here is bleaker than I could have ever imagined.
I sent off a couple resumes, photos and cover letters to recruiters posting on Dave's Job Board. This was just to test the waters, really. I don't plan on going with a recruiter unless something really decent turns up, I'm going to try and get a job through one of my friends still in Korea and if that fails, I'll hit a recruiter or apply directly.
The thing that scares me is that while a few recruiters got back to me straight away (seriously: within ten minutes), when I informed them that I'll only accept jobs that pay over 2.3m (because I'm experienced) they essentially told me to bugger off. One recruiter said (and I quote): "sorry, but all of our positions are in the 1.6m - 2.0m range."
Did things get really tight in the last year or so or what?
I'm looking for Hagwon work (sick of PS) which is why I'm being picky about salary. I am not picky about location, however. Just so long as it's not in butt****.
Hopefully I find something soon. I want to be there by December. |

Both. I just want to make more than 2m (2.3m at least).
I got a couple responses. There are a few that are looking good (one especially) but we'll see. |

I think it depends on a lot of the silly things, like appearance, and some of the non-silly things like experience. Some of my "tanner" friends had to go through a lot of applying to find the job they want; whereas my blond model like friends get treated like queens here! There are a lot of ppl coming over from the States, through word of mouth and mainstream news.
I would like to bump up my income too, or even teach some afterschool classes/do some privates but haven't been able to do so yet. I also wonder if its harder or easier to do privates as it was a couple years ago. |

The job market is nowhere near what it was a few years ago.
Anyone that's looked for a job recently can testify to this. |

I've been looking since Saturday and have had some offers. Some bad, some decent and one through a friend that looks really promising.
That fact that they've even replied to me in such a hurry means it can't be *that* bad. I've been looking for jobs here in Japan for a week because Korea is plan B. When I apply to a job in Japan the website tells me (after I submit my resume) that "1371 people have already applied for this position." That's for one job.
I think Korea has a long ways to go in terms of being that bad!
Though when I lived in Korea, I got my last job just by finding an area I liked, a public school that looked decent and having my Korean friend call the school asking if they needed a teacher. Less than a week later, it was mine. I guess those days are over. I'm getting 5 offers when I would've had 30 offers a few years ago.

I think those 1.6m jobs were part time positions. They had to be... what self-respecting person would take 1.6 for a Hagwon job. |

That's because I didn't start getting replies to job queries until after I posted this, haha. |

I'm sure you'll be able to get a job rurally in a public school or something. It cant be THAT saturated. Don't be too picky. |

Regarding rural public schools, Gangwon EPIK is planning to cut their foreign teaching positions by 60 or 70% over the next 3 years. This will substantially reduce the number of rural public schools available in Korea. I think we're going to be reaching a point where it really is that saturated in terms of public schools, which is going to impact Hagwon hiring too. |

The market is saturated.
Since you are in Japan and therefore so close, why not fly over to Korea and look for work locally. That will offer several advantages as many schools will prefer to hire someone who is already in Korea.
However, note that E2 regulations have changed and that you may have to gather some documents from home. Check with immigration before making any moves.
Good luck.
