Seems that I'm getting mixed information from this board and a recruiter:
Board - You only need to get the FBI check if you're coming in after January 1st
Recruiter - You need your FBI check to get your ARC in Korea, but can get in the country with a state CRC
I sent for the federal one a month ago, but haven't received it. I got some tracking number from the place I went to for the fingerprinting, but lost it. I also had an unofficial copy mailed to me. |
OKAY. I'm in the States. I WAS hoping to start early January. Too bad I didn't get going on all this until a few weeks ago - at the estimated time of processing for the FBI, early Jan is not seeming very likely (this is likely when I'll GET the CRC back, from what they've said, I suppose I can always cross my fingers that it will go faster but its the government I don't have high hopes). But given the post quoted...Is it possible to get the E-2 visa with the state check, so that I could start when I want to, and then just send over the FBI check for getting the ARC card once I'm in Korea?? Is this still doable for January?? |

In my state digital/scanned fingerprinting is done by one agency that travels around the state - they send the documents to a code number directly (school, agency, hospital) - not to the person being fingerprinted.
Therefore in order to get an FBI scan - it requires going to the police - getting an old fashioned ink stamp card - mail it with documents and wait an average of 12 weeks.
I have no idea if other states do the digital/scanned another way.
I was told the scanned/digital is not an FBI CBC - but is done by a privately owned company.
That is what is available in my geographic area.
Side note is CBCs checks are beginning to be a for profit business - my local school system is now using HIRE Right a for profit company rather than the less expensive and quicker state CBC.
Hire Right is definitely for profit - they tried to charge me extra - saying I lived in multiple counties - until I protested the charges on my charge card - I found out they have been doing this to al ot of local teachers in my area. |
oh I see. I live in North Carolina. I just went down to the local sheriffs main office downtown. They are the only people who can provide this service of fingerprinting. It was $10 for two copies.
They scan the fingerprints and print on a special card that complies with the FBI. The scans are your to to with what you want.
Since I live in Charlotte, North Carolina...the biggest city in my state....maybe the Sheriff's office is more high tech here? Did you go to the local police or to the Sheriff?
As for the work visa, I have not gotten that far yet. If the digital prints are not acceptable (if fingerprints are needed) I guess that would make sense since I wouldn't expect Korea to have the same equipment/software as we do here in the states?
I'll cross the visa bridge when I need to but does anyone know for certain that fingerprints are indeed needed to the visa. Are they done individually or done by a Korean official? |

To add some information (for what it's worth), and FBI CRC took me 9 weeks to receive. |

I have a question for the people who are already in korea...
How are you getting these documents shipped?..
Did you have a friend or family member send the documents over to the fbi or are you getting it straight sent to the fbi and sent back to you in Korea?
Do I have to get it sent to the state department for an apostille... after getting it authenticated by the fbi? |

really...when did you submit your prints...
I was talking to a friend a minds who work for the California State DOJ and she said it shouldn't take more than 12 weeks for the fbi cbc. And that I would probably get it sooner than 12 weeks. Hearing that it only took yours 9 weeks gives me hope that I'll receive minds a little before or after new years... |

So I finally got mine back.
Mailed out: Sept 1st, 2010
Arrived at FBI office: Sept 4th, 2010
Issued Date: Oct 26, 2010
Arrived at my house: Nov 1, 2010
So the wait time was about 8-9 weeks? Not bad for now I guess but I think it'll get worse in the future with the FBI check being required. |

Good info. Did you pay by credit card? If so, when did they charge your card?
My credit card record shows it was charged on Oct. 29th and I am trying to work out an estimate of when I will receive the report. |

I actually sent in a money order I got at the post office. I was just a bit iffy about writing my credit card info onto the form (in case the application got lost somehow). I would give it about 9 weeks from the day you mailed it in. |

My card was charged Oct. 20th and it arrived at my family's home just this week, so they basically charge your card right before mailing it out. |

Okay, I mostly stay in Thailand but I had to travel to Cambodia for a visa run. It sounds like the CRC will be sent out anytime now. I included a Fedex return envelope, however I was a bit worried if somehow the waybill I sent was not used, I would not have a tracking number. At least, not until later when my Fedex account is billed.
I had better hustle back to the address in Thailand where the CRC will be sent to.
Thanks for the helpful info! |

if your applying for EPIK but already have an F-4 visa does it matter when you get the FBI background check, as long as you get it in before your first day of work? Or do you need it at all? |

So would it take longer to get it notarized and apostilled yourself, or let the Feds do it? |
I wonder about that too. Also, do you have to have the FBI do the background check or can you get an independent company to do it? I'm not clear on this. |
