|
|
*for entertainment purposes only*
Add one point for each yes:
1. Are you male?
2. Are you between the ages of 20-29?
3. Are you white?
4. Are you a gyopo?
5. Do you have blue eyes? Blond/light hair (especially women)?
6. Are you fit/thin?
7. Is this your first time abroad?
8. Do you come from a small town or rural area?
9. Do you like spicy food?
10. Do you have a thick skin?
11. Do you like sports (playing and/or watching)?
12. Do you have a gf/bf who will be with you or do you specifically want a Korean one?
13. Do you like drinking? I mean, drinking a *lot*?
14. Are you still trying to figure out what you want to do in life?
Subtract one point for each yes:
1. Are you female?
2. Do you like arts/music/etc. over sports?
3. Are you non-white?
4. Have you lived abroad before?
5. Do you value politeness/common courtesy?
6. Do you value diversity?
7. Are you a member of any group that Koreans look down upon (overweight, anyone without very fair skin, women, unmarried people over age 24, ethnically Chinese/Japanese- subtract 1 point for each yes)?
8. Are you a gyopo with a particularly involved local family?
Point range:
15-7 points: The teaching abroad in Korea experience was made for folks like you! You will love every minute of at least your first couple of months/years in Korea. You will enjoy living and working with like-minded co-workers and be treated with respect maybe 70% of the time. Enjoy Korea!
6-0 points: You will, undoubtedly, have your ups and downs in Korea, but for the most part itll be a good time. It may take time (several months or even years) for you to find your niche in terms of social group/friends, job, and marriage (if applicable), but you can certainly make it if you try. If you stay long-term, you may run into bumps later, at least compared to your earlier coasting. Youll either rebound from these or take them as a sign that its time to move on.
Minus 1-Minus 6: Korea will not be an easy pill for you to swallow. You may find that the negotiation phase of culture shock is particularly prominent for you. Small cultural differences and the odd awkward or difficult situation may really get under your skin. If you are truly miserable, consider moving on early. If not and you choose to stick it out, you may find yourself with one of the most balanced perspectives on life as a foreigner in Korea among those you know here.
Minus 7-Minus 12: You may want to seriously reconsider coming to Korea. The best case scenario is that your experience will be like the bracket above, by sheer virtue and luck. The worst case scenario is that you may face some serious discrimination, at work and with the general public, be abused by your employer, and find yourself isolated and depressed. If you decide to make the leap, take extra care lest you begin to feel too isolated, pick up bad habits, and/or otherwise find your health and safety threatened. |

6. Last year I would have said the write-up is accurate, this year I think my score should be much lower. I've found Korea more annoying as time goes on, not less. |

10 points! Ya, I feel pretty good living here, though I don't want to become a lifer (trapped here...)
Why is "have you lived abroad for a year" a negative? Cause Korea isn't that great? I lived in Spain for a year, and honestly, Korea isn't any better or worse than Spain, given that English teachers there don't make jack squat for money, so you can't do anything... |

7 I'll take that. Nice evaluations and questions.
Maybe you're too qualified to be teaching here |

Are you kidding?
Here in Korea, how well a teacher teaches doesn't matter to anyone but the students.
I have the lowest score so far.
I got a -2. |
