The French can say all they want to about Americans but we don't set cars and gas station on fire when our government raises the retirement age to 62 from 60.

FRENCH PEOPLE = LAZY

What? Lazy? How does being upset about having to wait until you reach 62 years old to be able to collect your pension equal lazy?

I am not one for rioting or protesting, but I do agree with not changing the law.

I wish we could all retire at 60 or even earlier. Life is meant to be enjoyed. Working is just a way to fund that enjoyment. I'm in my early 30s and my wife and I are saving and investing as much as we can so we can retire in our 50s.

The discussion is rather different.

From the point of view of the population, it is considered a right.
From the point of view of the government, it is considered a privilege.

The government can not sustain the expenses and the only way to reduce it (it's a patch up) in the short run is to delay the time you get a pension.

Our generation might be lucky to get any at all.

If you save your dosh - and adjust your expectations on life - you CAN retire early. I'm retiring next year (early 50's), but I may teach a bit (sometime) to keep my brain active.

Working is the pits - 124 days to go!

I'm already expecting to be leached off of and get nothing in return. I feel bad for the young French who are protesting to get their taxes increased now, even though the program will be long gone by the time they hit 60.

its the notion of "entitlement" that is causing trouble. That one is entitled to anything in this world is going the way of the Dodo bird.

You're entitled to live in harmony with fellow humans and nature. Period.

If your government once said you were entitled to retire at 60 and now you're entitled to retire at 62 you're still way ahead of the majority of the world, who are entitled to work their butts off until the die. Quit yer cryin' and go back to work ya freakin babies.

French people. Sheesh!

For all of the French bashing on here, I think it is excellent to have a country like France to counterbalance the selfish and destructive capitalism of the United States.

I am not convinced that capitalism as it operates now and has operated in the past is the ideal way to provide for a country.

Things are usually a little more complicated that our prejudices and a sensationalist headline. This is what it's really about

This article has a sensationalist headline too, but it's also quite insightful about what's going on.

I work at an ocean shipping company and we are not shipping ANYTHING to France right now because they are striking at the ports. They do this at least twice a year. The French are cutting their noses off to spite their faces, and making their country less and less relevant to the international economy the longer this goes on.

Fixed. And, which region of the US should we start with for cuisine? Literature; let's start with Twain. Philosophy; start with Dewey. Art; how about Warhol or Disney? Wine; take a tour of Napa Valley. Cinema; hmm...Hollywood.

I'd say the French contributions to mathematics out strip any of these and are vastly more important as well.

Alright, I'll help him out a bit. Best wine in the world by blind taste test last year, American.
http://top100.winespectator.com/wineOfTheYear-2009.html
Authors: Hemingway, Steinbeck, Faulkner just off the top of my head
Philosophy: William James, the transcendentalists (someone may be able to do better with this one, not really my thing)
Food: I have eaten amazing food from all over the globe but my death bed meal is still southern BBQ. It may lack astetic virtue but wins in taste.
Film: 7 out of 10 of the top grossing movies in France last year were American films. #1 being Avatar showing that bad taste can be universal.

I think France is a pretty cool place and have enjoyed the company of all the french people I have ever met. I do get rather annoyed at the horse manure concept of superior European "culture" though. Back on topic, I admire the French peoples stance against their government sticking it to them but find the frequency and the intensity to be a little disconcerting. I'd like an America with a 50% French style rioting problem? Maybe 25%?
