I bribed all of my 6th grade classes for the midterm. I told them that the best class would have a choco-pie and juice party. I told them that it was the 6th grade midterm tournament. It will cost me a tenner, and got them to study for their test. (I also made them all promise to not watch TV or play computer games, and go to bed by 11pm for just one day, as well as eat breakfast the day of the test.)
I had kids coming up to me today shouting "Teacher! Me! 100! My class choco-pie party?"
I know... Terrible, yes? |

If the kids are consistently good they get addressed as Mr. or Ms. Those kids also get much more leeway and get to do things like use the computers in the English Zone and more freedom during class to work ahead.
If not, its their first names.
Ice Cream for the basketball team after the tourney and for kids that do things like fix my computer or run errands. Occasional pizza/Lotteria days for my afterschool kids (they're really great and I love to shower largesse on them)
Other than that I favor group rewards. In a class of 30, if 90% (27/30) do their homework, a point. If fewer than 80% do their homework, minus one point. If all do their homework, two points (No cunning!). Occasional class points for 'Great Days'. Class with the most points at the end of the semester gets a pizza party. If the other classes do extremely well then the runner(s) up get ice cream. On test days highest scoring class gets a point. If the first 3 people I call on for "Listen & Repeat" can't get it right, minus 1 point for the class. I really want each class to develop an espirit de corps towards their class (It's great to hear them shout out Class 6-1! with a sense of pride). Don't worry about the cost, at most two classes out of four will qualify. One other will do good, but not great (maybe candy or movie day for them) Sadly, there is always one class that seems to have terrible morale.
Winner of a game (a real one, not bingo) gets an individual point. 10 individual points=1 piece of candy. Same for doing an exemplary job during a creative in-class activity. Really do something amazing and I'll quietly give them a bonus after school (only a very select few students earn this- they have to do it in a genuine fashion- quiet superstardom).
You're not a charity. No rewards for doing what you're supposed to unless its collectively.
Do bad as an individual? Let's WriteX10. Do really bad, class punished and minus a class point. Really Really act a fool and its walking the line up and down between two rows of kids holding up their chairs for YOUR misconduct. Really Really Really act a fool and its talking to the gym teacher to have the class run extra laps in gym class.
