Is anybody going to try to head down to the COEX area to take a look at the demonstrations and the like? I'm a bit of a political junkie and was going to go down and take pictures, but this (http://english.yonhapnews.co.kr/national/2010/10/28/65/0301000000AEN20101028000500315F.HTML) gave me pause. |

Looks like a party! I'll be there taking pics.
The article reminds me of the candlelight vigils against "toxic" beef in 2008. Wouldn't be surprised if ridiculous numbers of riot police are deployed. |

I stumbled upon some of those protests when they first started. Sure, it's fun and games, but then someone tips over a police bus and soon enough it gets real ugly, really fast.
Remember, if you're here on an E-2, political activity is a no-no, so if you DO go and get caught up in something, even inadvertently, you could be in a world of hurt. |

I work 5 mins from Coex, and I'm quite interested to see how it will go. The rigmarole has already started though. There have been helicopters flying low in the sky today, and yesterday I was waiting for the pedestrian crossing at the front of Hyundai Department Store, and it was taking ages to change (way longer than usual on what is already a pretty long cycle). Finally some police cars came through with their sirens on, but the only other vehicle I could see was a crappy looking minibus...not sure what the deal was there. No limos or anything. Maybe it was a test run. |

Of course the US embassy is going to tell people to stay away. What do you think they'd say?
"By all means feel free to go and protest us at the G20"...
This is the part that caught my eye:
"The Coex Center will be closed to the public on Nov. 12, and automobile and pedestrian traffic will be restricted for two kilometers around the complex from Nov. 8 to 12."
Wow, that's going to create a traffic headache. |

Well, I think the whole thing is just stupid. Why have this meeting in the middle of a major metropolis? They could have it in the middle of nowhere, which would reduce security costs and minimise disruption to peoples' lives (imagine the losses the business around there are going to face). Or do it over Skype.
It was a colossal disaster in Toronto, and it will be here too. |

You can say that again. I felt bad for all those businesses who's stores were essetntially destroyed. A headache and a half. |

If the G20 is 11-11/11-12, why is the COEX only closed on the 12th? Can people still get there by subway? |

The security preperations are no joke. My division isn't being directly involved (thank goodness) but special ops, counter intelligence, and military police in other divisions are busy as hell these days. A major (possibly the biggest one in scale) military exercise was postponed for this. Elements of the Air Force are on stand by too just in case the Norks are up to something.
I feel really bad for the police conscripts. |

Stay away from political demonstrations in Korea, if you know what's good for you. |

I can't wait. I'm really excited for the G20. I expect there to be lots of fireworks and bloodshed. I'm happy to be in the far end of the peninsula in Ulsan. I'll watch it all
