k so I have posted before regarding P2P programs such as WinMx and Overnet. I fooled around with these programs for a while and successfully began downloading but was disappointed when it wasn't nearly as fast as I had hoped (max 39KB/s). I am not a computer genious but tried to set up configurations to make DL speed faster but to no avail. I even delved into the confusing world of torrents...man...that's a confusing world. Anyway what I wanted to see was if anyone had any opions on the validity of newsgroups. The pages that I checked preached super fast DL's but there were no free newsgroups that I could find. Questions, comments...direction for a lost soul in the world of contraband movies? |

get an irc program (mirc is the one I have) and use that, suprnova.org has an irc channel that allows you get torrents that way. There are also other channels out there tv torrents is another one
You need to recall all those dos commands (dir, cd/, get etc) but many of the channels have info posted on how to get torrents
I use that when suprnova is slow.
can somebody else amplify what i just tried to say? I know enough to find what I'm looking for via suprnova irc |

4:44 am, and I've skirted the issue of newsgroups before, but I'll run through it again.
Newsgroups are theoretically great for getting free-sh*t(tm), but there are some problems.
Best illustrated with an example.
Someone on Comcast back in LA will post a file to the local Comcast newsgroup. File A is about 50 megs and is going on a group called alt.binaries.freebies (as an example), on a news server called news.losangeles.comcast.com.
You're using KT cable, and you log into your news server, news.seoul.kt.co.kr, and you find the right group, hoping to snag the file. How does it go all the way from LA to Seoul?
Newsgroups are essentially a decentralised propagating network. The end user only has a single point of access (in this example, KT's Seoul server). The user doesn't have the entire network of servers at his or her disposal. This is flawed in a number of ways.
In order for the Seoul server to have the complete file A from LA, it needs to be passed through a network of servers that the LA news server is peering with. Peering simply describes a network that shares resources. Most probably, the Comcast server in LA doesn't have the KT server in Seoul as a direct peer. It may pass through SanFran, which peers with Hawaii, which peers with Tokyo which may finally peer with Seoul. So here is a virtual route of news servers that need to be updated.
Along the way, there are some losses that may occur. This might mean that some sections of the binary don't make it as completes, or are corrupt. This is a bad thing, since by the time it gets to Seoul, you have file A that will most probably not work at all, since various bits and pieces are missing.
The only content you can be assured of, is material that has been posted directly to your local server. That is, someone else on news.seoul.kt.co.kr has posted a file to that server. That way, provided the posting went without a hitch, you will be able to download it without a worry, and so will everyone else with access to that server. Well, almost no worries. There is the delay of post expiry..
Posts to the group have a finite life span, depending on how the server administrator has allocated resources. There is a finite amount of storage (HD space) that the server can hold, and in order for this to be used efficiently, posts are usually purged, in order of oldest to newest. This makes sense, as people want access to the new stuff, rather than the older content.
However, a poorly allocated server, and one that has a LOT of data coming in, will inevitably have a small window of opportunity. I've seen severs lose data within 2-3 days of it being first posted, and that's from a local source.
Newsgroups rate an "ok" from me as a source for downloads, but you need a stable, well managed server with solid peering with popular servers abroad, and most importantly, a community of people who are willing to post this material.
When people say they download the latest applications/games/movies off newsgroups, 90% are grabbing material posted locally, and the other 10% are on servers with quality peering arrangements with these big posting groups.
Remember that newsgroups weren't really intended for this sort of data, and the protocol hasn't scaled or been revised in any way to allow for this.
Newsgroups were just big forums where people could discuss all manner of things, much like Dave's Forums.
Hope it helped.
