Hey Everyone,
I just went out and bought a router so that I could hook up my PS3 and laptop to the internet at the same time. I may be doing it wrong, but from the internet box in my room, I connected the cord to the router where the main connection (not the four open slots) goes.
I tried plugging my internet in from the router to my laptop and I didn't get anything.
Is there a crucial step I'm missing?
P.S. I have a macbook pro. |

It's called the INSTALLATION SOFTWARE.
Without it, it's trash. |

No. Put the CD into the router. |

You don't need to install any software onto the laptop/computer to run a router. You can set it up without the CD as well. Just type in the correct address (something like http://192.168.1.1 or whatever your router says to do) in your browser when the router is hooked up to set it.
CDs come with routers to help with the installation process by giving you a quick start guide with instructions on screen. Sometimes they come with other programs you can install such as Adobe reader or what not. |

Ok... what about when I get my PS3? Do I have to install the router on that too? I've never used to need to. |

Did you have any luck getting things up and running? |

Funny story... I didn't get the PS3 when I thought I would (care package) so I returned the router. I'm thinking of spending a bit more cash and either buying wireless or one that says it's compatible with a mac/instructions with English.
I will update as soon as I get one! |

Cool, just bear in mind that you don't have to get an apple router for mac networking (eg airport extreme - which, not surprisingly, is apple's recommended option):
http://www.apple.com/airportextreme/
In theory, all routers which implement TCP/IP (any sane manufacturer has been doing this for years) will handle any operating system ... however, your operating system (Mac OSX, Windows, Linux, BSD etc) may decide to complicate things a bit.
A router that doesn't have a web interface will be MUCH harder to get working properly though if it is not for the intended operating system(s). Personally, I would be wary of picking a router (wireless or otherwise) which did not have a proper web interface and relied on a software to get it going.
Wireless if a great feature too - ultimately, you should choose what works for you and avoids stress (you want to use this thing rather than attempt to get it working) |
