Does anyone notice how a lot of sites can be slow as hell, snail speed sometimes....yet you can download a movie at 300+kb per second lol.
As I result I find myself turning to BitTorrents more often...i'm not sure who my provider is, but do they Cap accounts here like they do back home?
i.e. you download more than 100gigs in a month and your account gets flagged and speed reduced?
any insight would be appreciated. cheers |

There is no cap. You can download the full capacity of your line.

Its one of the most wired for internet countries in the world! "clogging the servers" is just another way Rogers (here in Canada) rips off its customers. |

Past month 190 GB down 1 TB up. No cap in place here
The slow website loading would probably just be a distance thing. and if you are only getting 300 down on your torrents, there is something wrong. |

public sites I regularly get between 1-2 Mb/sec. On private I have seen over 10 Mb/sec |

That site is not very useful for determining maximum torrent speeds.
It depends too much on location and one-to-one speeds rather than groups of peers and seeds. |

Change your dns server to Google DNS http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/
You'll see a vast improvement in web page load times and You Tube sort of videos buffering times. |

DNS has nothing to do with video buffering times. DNS is name resolution. As soon as the name is resolved, its out of the equation. |

I have also found that if you are accessing overseas websites that using an overseas DNS instead of the SK or KT or LG default DNS can be helpful. There are also more "hops" from one Internet router to another if accessing websites abroad.
Remember that the chain is only as strong as the weakest link, which can be affected by the time of day in the other parts of the world and the demand on that part of the Internet backbone.
Remember that the very nature of torrents make them vastly superior for sharing data from dozens of locations. Don't use them illegally. But they are very efficient because of the load distribution concept they use.

Damn...
I just moved into a brand new apartment and had SK Broadband install their 100Mb connection. I had the same service at my last place but here it needed a modem and he wired up via an optical cable. Anyways, I consistently downloaded at 6~7MB/s at the old place and now here, I'm getting 120KB on average on torrents!?!!!! WTF!!! I checked speedtest.net and it gave me 84Mb/s down and 37Mb/s up.
Nothing software/hardware has changed on my side of things. Still downloading the same content from the same sites. Tons of peers. It's like the new service (even though its the same plan) has torrents capped or something?! And I run Transmission on a Mac with 'encryption' enabled, but i've read that doesn't matter as the ISPs can still detect torrents.
Ideas? |
