I feel that what the OP says in his original post is fair.

Surgery is difinitley a good enough reason to have a sick a day.

Talking about any other sick day reasons is irrelevant. Also, being docked a day for a Halloween party day is ridiculous. This was on a Saturday afterall.

OP, I would just take the payslip into the the office first talk to the person who does the wages, it may be their mistake. Tell them that you had organised everything with your Director.

If you don't get any joy from the payclerk go and see your Director and politley ask why your payslip has been docked.

Good luck! If you don't get your money back, then just move on in February. You say you are on good terms with your boss, your boss doesn't deserve to have you if they don't show any compassion.

To be expected to work as an English teacher with stitches in your bleeding mouth, is draconian to say the least

In Korea, you are not expected to take a sick day unless you are dying.

Even then you need a doctors note first.

So to update:

talked to my supervisor today and she spoke the the person who does the pay stuff. I dunno what happened to cause the confusion the first time but Im getting the cash on my next check. The lady who does the pay stuff does want a note (supervisor seemed to think this was maybe not necessary but was akwardly validating it). It's not a problem as I need to go get stitches out later this week anyways.

So in the end it was much ado about nothing, just a clerical error like you had hoped for. Glad it worked out.
