... from 256 to 768 SDRAM/DIMM

I wanted DDR but found my mobo wouldn't support it. Also was looking at a super fast HDD, 10 000rpm, but the board wouldn't support that either.

I'm going to upgrade the board soonish, and get that fast drive, and move up to a P4 3Ghz.

Oh yeah, and I got a Tascam US 122 Audio/Midi interface, so I'm just peachy at the mo ... trying to work out how to use Logic Audio, it's cracked so I don't have the friggen manual ...

And That's That ...

Don't be concerned about rpm so much as throughput/seek time. Consider getting a board that supports SATA drives.

I would've have passed on the RAM until getting the board upgrade- you probably won't be able to use that SD ram on a new DDR supported board.

not too bad..

if ya have the rest it could be worthwhile to look for a new 'complete' case..

ya have to change most.. if ya buy it as a complete unit.. if is better for you repair and maintenence.. good chance it'll be cheaper too

just an idea

true.. but that is still a good price for sd ram

it is always better to upgrade the board before spending money elsewhere

Well, a stick of 512MB 133mhz SDRam is going for the equivalent of W122,000 here ($122 Cdn + taxes). Funny thing is, it's almost certainly made in Korea.

Anyway, a few bucks here, a few bucks there- bottom line is upgrading makes you feel good- and if you feel good, you look good! [old SNL joke]

Congrats KB, enjoy your upgraded rig.

Right about the seek time, but the faster rpms tend to come in tandem with the faster seek times, eg 8.2ms for a 7200rpm drive and up to 3.8ms for a 10 000 drive. And you're also right that I won't be able to use the sd ram on an upgraded board, but I wanted an upgrade now, and a new board means basically a new everything, so that will cost a bit, and is a bit off in the future.

I'm not a pc "petrol head" just concerned with power for it's own sake though. I want to do midi and audio recording and editing, and that requires performance in several ways. Having the OS on a super fast drive would be a good start, plus heaps of ram, and a super fast processor.

Best upgrade was going to a 17" LCD monitor last month--I'm never going back to CRT. But RAM's probably a more important upgrade, especially getting around or above 512 meg.

Kiwiboy,

Who did you go to and where? Did they speak English and sell complete systems?

Mathews World, are you in the market? No, I did this online, which was quite fun, as after 3 years here I can finally read and understand enough to negotiate ordering stuff online. The site I used is called enuri.com and from what I could see they didn't have complete systems. But I did get my original system online too, second hand, and very good deal, unfortunately I got help with that one and I can't remember the name of the site. But there are a lot of pc buffs around here who could help you with where to get a good one.

Cubase, dude, Cubase. Logic Audio's WAY harder to use. It's also obsolete - they stopped making it for the PC last year. Cubase SX 2.01 can be found in the usual places. Give it a go - you'll thank me.

Lemon, do you record? If so, what kind of stuff?

I've downloaded about 20 versions of Cubase and none of them will install properly. Always get the "Some files could not be located, cannot complete installation" message. Did you buy your copy legit?

Check your inbox.

Regarding downloading, you can get Cubase on Suprnova.org with the bittorrent client.

Lemon! Why have you kept your digital music making activities secret for so long? I'm impressed!
