I recently joined a gym and was told by the staff that I could leave my gym shoes on the shelf at the entrance along with the hundreds of other pairs between visits.

Yesterday I showed up at the gym and the shoes were missing. I searched high and low but they were no where to be found. They weren't overly expensive shoes but they are a size I can't easily find in Korea.

Just wanted to know if anyone else had their shoes snatched from the communal shoe racks in Korea? Given everywhere we go we are supposed to take them off, I've always kind of wondered if they ever get taken. It seems ridiculous someone would want used, possibly smelly shoes!

I had my shoes stolen at the gym the week before last...luckily I had my gym shoes on, so I didn't have to walk home barefoot.

I'd also like to know why it seems to be impossible for any Korean man over the age of 30 to sit/stand in the sauna without making ridiculous grunting noises.

In Seoul a few months ago, they caught a shoe bandit who would walk into restaurants and steal shoes.

This is why I always lock my shoes in my locker at the gym. I DO NOT CARE IF IT MAKES THE LOCKER DIRTY because I seriously doubt the gym is going to replace my shoes. I cannot find shoes in Korea. Even in the US a women's size 10N is difficult to find.

There is one place in Itaewon that my friends showed me. But mostly dress shoes, sandals, etc, no sneakers. They go up to Korean size 280, US women's size 11ish.

As for sneakers, I just get my sister to send me New Balance ones in my care packages.

Had a brand new pair of Nike flip flops (40,000won) stolen from the locker room just a few minutes after I'd left the building and realized I'd left them in the shoe area. Five minutes is all it takes with some of these youngsters I tell ya.

There is nothing worse than going out with a large group of people in Korea to a restaurant, and finding out you have no more nice, expensive shoes when you're drunk and leaving. So what's the answer? Bring a bag and wrap them up and put the bag right where you can see it. That's only if you care about 500 bucks you spent on that pair, but you can always wear sandals, heh.

LoL, that is one advantage of being a 5'8" (171cm?) in Korea. Most Korean women would disappear in my shoe. Now my sneakers are a problem, because I tend to wear gender-neutral colors. I try to always put my shoes where I can see them, just in case. I like your bag idea when when there is a lot of people. I have a little bag that folds up and fits in your hand. I should start using that. Thanks~!

500 bucks on shoes... I'd spend that much if there was a gun to my head.

I don't really care if people step on, or in fact steal my shoes. They're old, dirty, already bend and broken. If someone steals them it might actually make me begin to consider buying a new pair. But I don't like to rid myself of something until it's completely unusable.
Frugal is me.

i've had my shoes stolen twice.
korean thieves like shoes, umbrellas, bicycles, scooters and small motorcycles, helmets and sometimes jackets.
they seem to have little interest in mobile phones or notebook computers, etc...
i bet if the opportunity was there, they would steal things like towels and toiletries too...
...but your wallet is safe.

This has gotto be the saddest thread I ever read..

All you people wearing $200 ~ $500 shoes and just leaving them where people can take them.

geez...
