I'm in korea 6 months now. Have been looking at uni positions and other possibilities. My hagwon would not raise a stink as long as I give the appropriate notice and the relationship has been good. Just need more time off to pursue plans and uni/piblic would allow this. I took the job to get working here and its been fine but only 5 days off in a year and 5 days at the end just doesn't work. Has anyone been down this road and if so what lessons have you learned that may benefit me? As I say I've not broken my contract, not missed a day, the boss isn't an animal and if anything, would just want to hang onto me. Do many people change mid-contract? Mine states that once I've done 6 months they can't claw-back any flight money and once i've paid my bills and give 30 days notice I'm not breaching the contract. I don't want to be sly about this and would prefer to be up-front. Telling my boss i've received an offer for a uni or public position and explaining the reasons for moving in that direction should be enough...shouldn't they? I just want to be able to get a letter of release when the position is locked in. My current contract isn't up until May 2011 and I'd prefer not to have to wait until then if possible. Please advise. For public school positions May would not be an issue if you want a September start (EPIK for example).

For Universities, March is the usual start date but there are a few Universities who staff for September start dates.

As for your employer, you know him/her better than any of us so it would be odd to speculate on what he/she would do when you hand in your notice.

One thing is for sure, if you pulla runner, you can be forced to wait until your current visa expires (if your employer does not cancel the visa) and thereby be unable to obtain a new visa before that time, which would be May-June.

I think that the situation for runners is still unclear. I've heard from people who DID pull a runner (and cancelled the visa themselves at the airport) and had no problem getting another visa right away (with new documents of course). I've also heard from people who, like you say, had to wait until their original 12 months was up, regardless of when they left. I've also heard from people who had to wait until 6 or 9 months of the original visa were up. Whatever the law is, I don't think it's universally enforced. I should add that I haven't recently heard from anyone who DID have to wait. In all the recent stories I've heard, the teacher was able to get another visa right away.
