I'm looking for a game I can do on the whiteboard or with flashcards

Can you explain what Tornado, Guess What I'm Saying (20 questions?), Secret Card, Treasure Hunt, (Spin, Face, Say), Prison, and Word Race?

Maybe I know some of them, but by a different name.

It would take a lot of time to describe all these games!

GO HERE and search games - you'll have plenty of selections and descriptions by other teachers.

Also, David Paul's book Teaching English to children in Asia , has a handy list of basic games at the back.

Tornado

Can be used in question/answer-type activities. Have flashcards on the board. Teacher points at a card and asks "What are these?" and the students, who are sitting in their chairs, answer "They're books!" Have one of your flashcards as the key one. So let's say you have classroom items such as pencils, books, erasers, bookbags and rulers. The teacher can ask about about any item as many times as he/she wants, but when he/she points and asks about rulers, the students must answer and get out of their seats and find a different/empty one as well as the teacher. Student left standing is the new teacher.

Kids love it.

Secret Card

Cover flashcard partially and the students have to guess what it is.

Treasure Hunt

Hide items related to current subject in the classroom. Do it in teams. First team to find them all wins.

Spin, Face, Say

Two students back to back. You give them each a flashcard to hold in front them. Teacher yells "1,2,3, Spin!" and the student who says what the other has first wins.

Prison

Like Snakes and Ladders. Draw a square or rectangle w/ different spaces w/ Start and Finish. Play it in teams. Use dice and you imagination. And colored magnets. One square gets you sent to an outer prison square. You need to roll a double w/ 2 dice to get out. Students must practice unit language in order to roll the dice.

Word Race

In teams w/ time limit. Team w/ most words written wins. Can be words beginning w/ "st" or "br" or whatever you like. The kids like it at my school because we can write on the floor.

I got the basic idea for tornado, maybe call it scatter instead, but what does "empty one" mean?

For the word race, is it better to have them make as many words or take turns and spell words?

Students often misspell words (which makes hangman a disaster at times), so I would want a chance to correct the spelling. If they spelled the same word, then the first correct one gets say 1 point, and then you continue.

Also, how long is the paper? When I read it, I pictured a long sheet. Is it just one regular A4?

The most accurate answer I have to all of your questions and suggestion about the name of "Tornado" is "Use your imagination."

Hey anyone have any quick games to fill in five minutes? Some of the games, mentioned already, sound great, but I teach at a Hagwon where each class is 40 minutes. So there are times when I need a quick game to fill time or perhaps a quick game to get them to calm down (anyone have games for that?)Very Happy.

Feel free to go through lesson notes at http://englishlessons.wikispaces.com

There are activities, games, and blackboard ideas. For specific lessons on the left, I have added some things you can do (usually at the bottom of the corresponding page)

Just guessing games!

No prep... "I'm thinking of a fruit."

"Banana?'

"No, it's red."

"Apple?'

"No, it's small."

etc.

Let the students take turns to think up stuff for guessing. It's fun!

Actually, search on that site or google for "powerpoint games template mega-pack".

Make some multi-purpose games... you can play 5-10 mins at a time of them, as long *as you make sure each team of students gets an equal number of turns*.
