Can anyone please give me information about life in Andong? Such as:
The people? Are they just like anywhere else in Korea?
The weather? Is it just like anywhere else in Korea (besides Jeju)?
Western food? I heard there is a Pizza Hut and a Mr. Pizza are they any good? Pizza Hut always seems expensive...what of Mr. Pizza?
Gyms?
English speaking churches?
Is Andong University anything to write home about?
I heard there is a Mask Festival here. When is that?
Any other useful information or "survival" skills?
Thank you kindly

Mr Pizza sucks imho. They won't even let you order a customized pizza. I went there with a Korean friend and we went through like 3 waitresses/managers trying to get a custom pizza made, epic fail. The menu is english though so you can just point to some crap and get hooked up. |

It's a pretty backwater town, quite small. Not as many people speak English, nor isit as accessible if you don't know some Korean.
There's no English churches, and the University is tiny, nothing to really speak about. There's a few gyms, but nothing that great. The Pizza is mediocre, even for a Mr. Pizza, which itself is "meh".
My only useful survival skill for Andong is to not live there. |

Andong? I went there w/a girl I was seeing and we stayed the night. Backwoods town, very rustic, nothing much except peace and quiet...but still I don't know if I could spend a whole year there without killing someone, lol. |

The good things about Andong:
The Mask Dance Festival (held yearly)
Andong Jjimdak
Folk Village
Very laid-back atmosphere (if you like that kind of thing)
The bad things:
Very quiet, not much happening
Kind of isolated
Rustic and rural
Small
If you're looking for a bit more excitement, then you might be better off elsewhere. |

I lived and worked there in 1995 - 1996 and tutored there on the weekend in 2002. I have kept in touch until now with friends I made there.
Being my first posting, I was spoiled by the hospitality of the people of Andong. ( not including my boss who was from Daegu anway, who was a *beep* )
I never had enough time to do as much as I wanted to, since we worked six days a week.
But when I go back there, I love the food - Kalbi is delicious and cheap and the Andong Jimduk is awsome.
A person would have to make as many friends as he or she could, hit the fitness club and Jimjilbangs, and get to Daegu or even Seoul as often as they could.
Personally, I never left the town the whole year except for a short vacation to some other small town! |
