My name is Ally Mac and I'm currently an English teacher in South Korea. I'm leaving my position soon and my school has asked that I look for a new teacher.

The jobs below are really great. I know plenty of people who have had bad experiences in Korea with schools not paying them and firing them early to save on money etc etc.... MOD EDIT is a fantastic company. It has its good points and its bad, like any job, but it's a happy environment, with lovely people, in a great city/area and the kids are fantastic.

LOCATION

The job is in the city of Daegu. It's located about 2 hours from Seoul by train and 1 hour from Busan by the sea. The city is surrounded by mountains and it's really beautiful. The school is located in an area called Wolbae. It's about 15/20 mins on the subway to the centre of town (downtown). There's everything you need in the city, from an imax to a football stadium. In wolbae, there is a major bank, korean market, subway, supermarkets, places to eat.... it's a great area. By taxi it's 20 mins from downtown and costs approx $10 or �5.

APARTMENT

The apartment I'm in right now might be getting sold, so I'm unsure what apartment. They are all the same and all in the same building. Very simple layout. Bath, bed, small kitchen etc etc.... underfloor heating rocks in the winter. The apartments are literally round the corner.

THE JOB

There are two jobs available. Both work for the same company, in the same building but they are very different. Here's the low down.

MOD EDIT

The basics: MOD EDIT is an English village. The students come to the school is big groups and they are introduced into real life situations. So, the school is a big open space with lots of booths. For example a post office, flower shop, vet, E.R, ticket booth etc etc. The children learn scripts and then they come to MOD EDIT The kids come through Immigration, you just ask them questions and they show you their passports, it's lots of fun. Then you go to your assigned booth, do the script with them and then play games. That's it. This job is very easy. There will be a few other classes in the school up stairs but they too are easy. More actual teaching in a classroom but the kids rule. You will also have 2 adult classes but again, they are lovely and they buy you food!!!

Wage: The wage is 2 million won. A lot of people are earning 2.1 or 2.2 in Daegu BUT...... The tax system in Korea is crazy and I have friends who walk away each month with the same amount as me, but they technically earn more. We get taxed a decent amount and walk away, without a doubt, 1.9 million. That's at this moment about $1700 or �1060. I personally save 1.3 million a month. If you're careful, you can save a lot.

Class size: Class sizes vary. For the main job, you're class could have 5 or 15 kids. It's fun with more, makes the games better. The classes up stairs are elementary kids and maybe 3-5 kids? The adult class is only 2 adults.

Age: The kids are usually ages 9-15 years. Sometimes a little younger and obviously the adults are in their 30's or so. I think.

Airfare: The airfare will be paid in full. You buy the ticket and give the receipt to Kris (The boss) and she will give you the money back in your first wage. Easy as. Same with when you leave.

Bonus: All the usual perks of Korea. You get a whole months wage ON TOP of your last months wage, just for making it a year in an easy ass job. NICE!
Other teachers: MOD EDIT there's only 1 other teacher, Eric from USA. He's a really nice guy. Kris the boss sit in the same office and is the best boss ever. Buys food, lets you go home early, crack jokes. Very lucky to have her.MOD EDIT school up stairs, there's me who's leaving, Evan from USA and Sunny/Jinny/Mandy/Sophia who are the korean teachers. Everyone is lovely here.

Hours: MONDAY - 3pm-10pm TUESDAY - 2pm-9pm WEDNESDAY - 2pm-9pm THURSDAY - 3pm-10pm FRIDAY - 2pm-9pm

The general hours in school are approx 35 hours but actual teaching sits more around 25 hours. The rest is spent chatting or watching movies.

MOD EDIT

The basics:MOD EDIT is a awesome little school. Unlike MOD EDIT, it's a teaching school with classrooms and books. You will teach a range of ages, from kindergarten to middle school. It's really fun teaching a range and keeps you on your toes. MOD EDIT This job is for someone more interested in actual teaching. The nice thing about this position is, you get to have a closer bond with the kids as you see them day in and day out.

Wage: The wage may seem pretty low at 2 million won BUT it's not too bad. A lot of people are earning 2.1 or 2.2. Hours: MONDAY/TUESDAY/WEDNESDAY/FRIDAY 12.30pm - 8.30pm THURSDAY 1pm - 9pm

In school hours are 40 hours but the actual teaching time is about 25 hours. There is prep work but you can do that at your desk eating and watching facebook.

I'm sure there's loads more info to tell but I can't think of it.

AS A FRIENDLY WARNING, BE CAREFUL WHEN CHOOSING YOUR SCHOOL. YOU MAY GO FOR THE JOBS THAT PAY THE MOST, BUT AS AN EXPERIENCED TEACHER HERE IN KOREA, YOU CAN NEVER BE SURE. ALWAYS ALWAYS TALK TO CURRENT TEACHERS AT THE SCHOOL BEFORE ACCEPTING!!!! TO MOST SCHOOLS, YOUR CONTRACT MEANS NOTHING UNTIL YOU HAVE BEEN IN KOREA FOR A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF TIME (9 MONTHS).

Looks good, but the experience requirements are over the top. Consider meeting the, "highly preferred," is necessary to get put on the plane. I can't count how many jobs I applied for where I just ignored the 3 to 5 years experience requirement hoping I get a lower paying entry level position doing the same thing just to get a leg in the door. It goes like this with the usual computer skills a given. Those companies only demand experienced mid to late career professionals hitting the ground running. This has been a catch 22 conundrum for many just trying to get a toe in the door during the past 10 years in just about everything, but retail services.


3-5 years of professional experience in curriculum analysis, design, and development with emphasis in English language

Formal English language teaching experience



Highly Preferred:

Must clear background check and drug test

At least 5 years experience in teaching and designing an English Language Program outside the United States.



Not only is 5 years teaching experience necessary, but also this 3 to 5 years of analysis, design, and development which would be a head teachers or school admin position. This position with Dyncorp is the upper echelon position of ESL teaching. This is a legitimate corporate job paid for by Uncle Sam. Dyncorp is well known to be a part of the military industrial complex. Good luck getting the first toe in with a flight to the city of Bad dad.
