has anyone ever signed a contract then backed out in light of a better opportunity? just curious of the repercussions.

Don't sign until you are ready to go to immigration.

I signed one but backed out before I sent off my documents. No repercussions.

If they have your hard copies (degree, CRC, etc) it can cause problems.
If they have applied for your visa confirmation number it can mean that you cannot accept another contract for up to 90 days (till the number expires).

If they do NOT yet have your hard copies then there is no issue other than the moral one (you signed so you should be committed) but that is not up for debate here.
