Have you been in Ca lately? You go to a doctor and tell him you can't sleep and you get a card allowing you into grow shops to buy legally. I was blown away when I got back. But, yes, Prop 19 would have been sweet.

Just curious, are you originally from Canada or California or the West Coast?

I'm glad it didn't pass. They are trying to legalize it for the wrong reasons, namely to tax it. They have this idea that pot is going to save them, which is ridiculous. Fact is, because it's still a federal crime, the state would spend tons of money fighting against the Feds. Maybe not now (Obama's Justice Department doesn't enforce Federal marijuana laws against states) but in the future, another President will. Even the current administration might take exception to a blanket legalization.

CA needs to get their house in order before wasting the peoples time and money on this.

Weed's one of the most overrated things on the planet.

Now booze, that's a drug. It's a good, multi-purpose drug. Yeah, it's more deadly than weed, but whatever. Criminalize, decriminalize weed, I don't care. Criminalize alcohol, you've made yourself an enemy.

Now making mushrooms legal is something worth fighting for, forget weed.

you really think so? i don't think the federal government would keep fighting an uphill battle. i mean, 14 states have already legalized it for medical reasons.

Don't think you needed to list California there.

I don't think that's a wrong reason. Wouldn't it be better the state government EARNED money from marijuana instead of SPENDING money to prosecuting marijuana users and dealers? That's also why prohibition ended: the Great Depression. States needed new sources of revenue so alcohol became legal again.

That being said, you do make a good point about blowing that extra tax revenue on legal fees to fight the DOJ. The DEA and Obama administration warned it would fight the new law if Prop 19 passed.

Taxing it was just the post popular way to add legitimacy to P19. IMO the best reason to legalize it (and a lot of other things) is the principle of freedom. If you aren't actively and directly harming someone else, or denying them freedom, there should be no law against it.

I think the proponents just believed the financial argument made more sense.

Yes, I agree with all that.

All the kids at the high school where I work in California were glad it didn't pass. They were afraid it would put most of the street dealers out of work and make it harder and more expensive for them.

When I got back to California I was amazed to see ads for pot dispenseries and doctors who prescribed pot for just about anything. Back pain, insomnia, nausea etc. The dispenseries have 20-30 different strains, hash, brownies, soda, ice cream. Its crazy. And these places are all over. All prop 19 would have done was cut out a visit to the doctor.
