Actually, when I worked there they had a monthly "pub night" at a nearby watering hole, where instructors were strongly encouraged to attend and mingle with the adult students to give them a chance to practice their English skills. That was a pretty good perk of the job, I must say! I'm guessing the commercial is trying to make it seem like a good perk of being a student too! |

They might pull in a few punters like this but I've worked in adult institutes and in my experience the vast majority of students are there to get a better job, TOEIC or IELTS score. They tend to be hard working professionals with very little time or bookish academic female student types, whose idea of fun is to spend a couple of hours in Starbucks. You come across the occasional attractive twenty something who likes to go clubbing but they're very much in the minority.
I bet they're not keen on hiring teachers who crack onto students all the time but at the same time they want their teachers to go to pub nights and the like. The problem is the only teachers who will want to go to pub nights and the like will be those who want to crack onto the students. For those in relationships it'll just seem like work. Catch 22 |

No teachers were cracking on(or dating) students-they would have been canned pretty quickly.
Pub nights were very popular with the students, even the hard working professionals and the bookish academic female student types. |

I heard Wall Street makes most of its money on the land/buildings it buys. The English teaching part of their business isn't what makes them money. And they aren't doing well is what I've heard. I think their service is gauranteed, a customer can complain that they didn't learn enough English and receive all money back. English teachers are suppose to pass or not pass students(allow to proceed to next unit) depending on their ability/knowledge in any given unit. If you don't pass the student and the student complains guess who is wrong...Of course the English teacher, for doing his/her job. Good Luck! |

Paying money off the clock to drink with your students is not what I call a perk. And certainly if you have to wake up and teach early the next morning is what I call teaching while intoxicated. But, I'm sure Wall Street only hires moderate drinkers. Wall Street sounds like one of the few companies in Korea that doesn't care whether you're a "Christian" or not. |

a)Teachers didn't pay, the students and the company did. I did consider it a nice perk;
b)no one was getting sloppy drunk or staying out all night, so no one was still intoxicated the next morning;
c)I'm not sure their hiring policy concerning drinking, but I am sure they would have fired someone drinking at the school;
d)not sure what being "Christian" has to do with this thread at all. We're talking about adults having a few drinks together in a setting outside the school.

They organised pub nights with free beer and none of the teachers got drunk or tried to cop off with a student? Wall Street must have discovered the magic formulae for hiring EFL teachers. |

WSI doesn't have a stipend for its monthly pub nite? Sounds irrational to me on a business level. Nobody pays anything? Sounds unbelievable and unbelievably stupid as well. Regardless, you are there basically to help WSI and its students learn English while NOT being paid. There's a sucker born every minute. Below is what happens when companies pay for and promote alcohol...

When you've been around the block for a while you might someday get the "Christian" thing. |

Haven't you ever learned that nothing is "free?" |

I don't get the negativity. It's a social gathering once a month that helps improve the student-student and student-teacher relationships. Creates a more comfortable atmosphere in the classroom. And gives everyone something else to talk about in class. It expands.
It's not enabling drinking and driving. Where do you get that? And who's to say the teachers don't get paid for this? Maybe they do.
I saw the teachers and students playing games in a mall here in Shanghai to celebrate Halloween. Candy tossing game. They looked like they were having fun. I don't know about Korea, but tuition at Wall Street here is pretty high and they pay for a year. Something like 30,000 rmb. So they probably pay the teachers fairly well. And the students would expect something in return.
Gets me thinking about that thread on someone's boss trying to get his teacher to visit homes on the weekend. As stupid as it sounds, the boss might've been on the right track, but instead of his idea, he could organize events at the academy once a week/month. Or outside the academy. Maybe on weekends once a month. But not at students' home. Just some kind of gathering once a month at one location. Of course the teacher would be aware of this before signing the contract and get paid for it.

Ed, maybe you are getting the wrong idea about these "pub nights". They were not held at discos like in the video, but in pubs where everyone sat at tables. They were company sponsored events and there was always a supervisor there. Wall Street has a strict policy about dating. Everyone was on their best behavior. They usually lasted only a couple hours, but they were pretty enjoyable anyway.
Now, after the "official' pub night broke up, and everyone went on their way, it's possible that there may have been some people meeting up and getting together at other places, as young people often do.(Not me, I'm older and had to work early) However, I still would not characterize it as "cracking" or "copping off" on vulnerable students. If they did, I never heard about it. |

I still don't get it! Christians can drink with the best of them. |

My original point was that the youtube advert did look like a night club and I doubted whether many potential students would be attracted to a TEFL institute for that reason. If WSI does have a no dating policy it seems a bit hypocritical to show suggestive adverts like that one to get people through the door. It reminds me of a school I knew about in Turkey that only employed young women to get all the men through the door then had to fire them all later when the women started inviting students round for wild parties at their flats. Fair enough a couple of drinks in a pub atmosphere is a different kettle of fish, and probably a good idea, though it should in no way be obligatory. |
