Anyone know if its possible to ferry a car out of Japan to Vladivostock?
Buy a cheap, reliable Toyota or something, ferry to Russia, go on a nutty trans siberian one back to Europe. It seems like its easy enough getting a temporary permit to get the car into Russia if you own the car.
Obviously no ferry means no nuttyness though! |

This posted reminded me of The Long Way Around.
I'd love to do this, especially on a bike, but it sounds dangerous as alluded to above. You're tooling along way out in the middle of nowhere and get stopped by the wrong people, and no one ever sees you again. |

Its on! But even better than from Japan...from Donghae in Korea.
Piece of cake to register a car here (only problem is finding something reliable)
Ferry is $300 for the car and $200 for each passenger sleeping on the floor.
I know about a temporary permit to drive into Russia with a car but what country should I drive out of on the other side?
Danger of driving through wilderness etc? Never even crossed my mind! Stop in towns and villages. Cant be more than a thousand or so miles between towns, thats 15-20 hours driving.
The road probably carries more traffic these days now the road has been 'completed'

man, I really respect your wanting to to do this but one thing that would scare the crap out of me would be getting stopped, robbed and having my car/bike taken in the middle of the night.
I dont want to be a nay-sayer so I would really advise you to check with the british embassy in russia to see what areas are safe and what the current problems are before you commit. I would always do this somewhere like burma, parts of africa and russia.
Just looking out for a fellow traveller... |

I say just do it, don't worry about naysayers.
And is going through Russia really that dangerous? I think it's a bunch of hype, people drive through South America and Africa all the time and arrive alive. I can't imagine Russia being much different. |

Its a state of mind really.
Like people who buy insurance, they look at the odds and they decide they dont want to take the risk.
Worry about gettin hijacked/mugged/robbed/killed: Its gonna mean you cant have the experience.
Take into account the figures then make the decision. What are the odds of getting stopped or blocked off when driving? Are these people jackin people everyday of the year? Am I going to be the unlucky first person that day?
Of course not speaking Russian and all them things should be taken into consideration, but driving some old (reliable) banger shouldnt draw too much attention, bar the Korean plate.
Its not like going into Iraq now is it. |

Yeah. I don't think Russia is so full of bogeymen.......I'm insanely jealous. I wish I had the opportunity to do something like this. It would be an amazing journey.
What kind of car would you use? I've hard some parts of the road are likely to get rough at any time of the year. |

great advice! 'i think russia is ok'. Have you done much travelling off the beaten track?
People can spot an idiot a mile away. I cant believe the crap i see people carrying around when theyre back packing like new ruck sacks, laptos etc and then wonder why they get mugged.
People disappear in the middle of north carolina every year who are on road trips, why wont it happen in russia.
I went to columbia a few years ago but checked it out first. Id say what kept us out of the crap was that we wernt flash and tried to stay street smart which sounds common sense but its amazing how many people dont do that.
Op is right when he says buy a crappy looking old car. Like I say, Im looking into doing this myself next year on a bike. The best thing to do is buy a runner thats not flash and do your research - for example find out about border crossings, visas, licences, even getting a GB sticker on the back will keep you out of a lot of crap (my mate who drove across africa to london swore by that). But definately always check with the embassy cos they should always be in the know.
But im not being a naysayer - i am doing it myself. but an ignorant attitude will get you into a pile of dung |

Something like a Toyota Corolla would be ideal, 91-95 model. I know the mechanics on them cars are pretty basic too, not much electronics involved.
Ive been to a few places but it is more about not being an idiot and keeping your head if something did go wrong, breakdown etc.
Travelling light would be the way forward so it didnt attract thieves. |

Awesome idea but I can never get away with pulling it off. I can't even try to look un-American.
I would pull it off on a bike. Definitely not in my Harley though maybe a KTM or flat black BMW.
I swear some of those car/bike magazines actually pay for some sort of escort/protection. |

Our family knew of a guy who drove a motorcycle through South America. His family never heard from him again! Totally disappeared. |
