ugh, i just need to vent.
i played a game with my A level students and they finished it faster than other classes. so we had 6 minutes left in class. the kids are really nice and about 5 of them (14 in total) like to just shoot the S with me. so after we finished the game i said "alright, lets just have free conversation time." so i'm talking with some of the students for about a minute then the co-teacher who literally does NOTHING in my A-level classes butts in and says "actually, they need to copy down the dialogue from lesson 11."
the bell rings, and as the students are walking out, they're saying to me "teacher, why can't we have free conversation? we want to talk with you" or "____ teacher is very annoying." "______ teacher is so scary"
so i approach the co teacher after class and tell her that if she's going to do that in the future, pull me aside, tell me what she wants them to do, and then *I* should be the one to make that call. instead of her undermining my authority. then i said "when you do that, it just makes me look like some random foreigner with no power" and she responds "you are." then i get pissed off...... ugh.... she finally apologizes but it's all BS. i don't even want to finish the story anymore.
there was a thread about the worse part about your job. for a lot of teachers, it's the students, but for me, it's my stupid co-teacher. the 38 year old single woman who is angry and bitter. |

So you're the assistant teacher to her and she's right.
Feel better? |

alright, time to vent more. i told her it's important for the foreign teacher to have students feel comfortable talking openly with them. that it's one of my objectives because you know how shy most k students can be. so i said that i like to have a relaxed and friendly atmosphere in my class.
the k teacher's rebuttal was "only about 4-5 students talk to you" and i said "right, but if other students can see that i'm easy to talk to and that they can talk about anything, other students will feel like they can approach me as well."
because so many times, even in my A level class, students will ask the k teacher something in korean that can easily be asked in english, but some of the students are just too shy to ask it to me. i've been having problems with this teacher all year.
during summer camp, we had food. she told me specifically not to eat in the classroom, so we didn't, we ate outside the classroom and left the trash outside so that later we can clean it up. she barges in, yells at me in front of the class, accuses me of lying, realizes that she was dead wrong and then apologizes later. this isn't her first time to undermine me.
i know she resents me because i get treated better because i'm the foreign teacher and she gets treated like crap because she's not even a certified teacher so she gets a crap wage with no benefits yet she has to put up with all the normal teacher's standards. i can see why she's got a problem with the system, but to take it out on me, is wrong. |

yeah, but after she's told me "this is your class, you have to take care of this class by yourself." at that point, she willingly gave up the position as the head teacher during MY classes. |

yeah, she has two masters degrees and makes 1.8, and it's because she can't get her teaching certification. no need to take it out on me though. anyway, this isn't just a thread for me to vent.... misery loves company. |

Wow...honestly if that happened in my class (and it has) the only thing I'd say is "okay" and let her do what ever she wanted. That's a battle not really worth picking in my opinion. |

I see this as vent-worthy, but not really a big problem. I agree that the best thing to do is say, "well, ok". But it is annoying enough to bitch about, at least a little.
The thing that bugs me in this kind of situation is that the other teacher didn't just say right away, as soon as the class ran short, "Oh, good! There's something we should do, and now we have time!" Instead, she let a semi-experimental activity go for a couple of minutes, and then she stopped it and made it sound like they were wasting time.
Ugh, you know who's wasting time? Me! How can I get the school to block Dave's? |

I agree that this is bent worthy. I would have done the same in my first couple of years. I guess I've just been beaten down by the system but I have noticed that things in the workplace are going much smoother than they did in the past. |
