Hi,
There's a lot of confusion as to what immigration need from us in order to re-sign and extend our visas. I work at a University and want to extend another year in a couple of months, so I called them to clarify.
They said I do not need to re-submit anything THIS TIME (but will need to a following time) if I submitted my original diploma and national police check when getting this visa, which I did.
I got the Disclosure Scotland criminal check - is this considered a national check? Is there even such a thing as local check in the UK??
Wasn't totally reassured by the lady on the phone so would appreciate any input from other Brits... |

I'm not 100% certain, but from what I've been told the following is true:
1) Disclosure Scotland is a national level check.
2) There are local checks in the UK. As an example, I applied for one originally for the West Midlands, though I later got a Disclosure Scotland one, because it's a lot faster. |

Strictly speaking, there is no such thing as a local police check in the UK. The subject access check (available from any police station) is a national check. The Basic Disclosure (Scotland) is also a UK-wide national check. I wouldn't be surprised if Basic Disclosures becomes the norm in the future for immigration, mind you, as the 3 Disclosure checks are the usual standard in the UK for criminal background checks in jobs in 'vulnerable' sectors. |

Both are national checks, but police station checks can take up to 40 days whereas the Basic Disclosure says anything up to 14 days. Those are the sole differences (and the police check is about a tenner, whereas the Disclosure is about 23 quid or thereabouts). The two checks available check the same things that immigration are looking for. |
