There's only two places I ever go for Tex-Mex in Seoul, On the Border and Tomatillo, and I have few complaints about either place.
Tomatillo is amazing and not too expensive (considering Tex-Mex in Korea is a luxury), but the menu is extremely limited. The weekly specials are nice, but some of them really need to stick around as permanent additions. Also, the price of chips could stand to come down a bit. Ooh, almost forgot: if you ask for a strong margarita, you get a STRONG margarita... and for no extra charge.
On the Border is almost just like home... almost. It's definitely much more expensive, but thankfully the portions haven't suffered. I never go without a partner so I can split the massive fajita platter, but I still can't walk out of there with a bill under W40,000 for nothing more than one main course and two drinks. As for the food, my only complaint is the extremely poor decision to use lemons as a substitute for limes; the little yellow cousins just don't cut it. The drinks are always tasty, but the bartender is always a real Nazi with the tequila; on more than one occasion I've had to ask if I was given a virgin margarita by mistake (I wasn't). Other than that, though, the food is really tasty. |

I forget the name, but the Mexican joint in Songtan with the Mexican chefs had good Mexican food, but then again, if you can't be bothered making the 1.5 trip from Seoul to Songtan (which is like Itaewon, but way better), then there's no point mentioning it I suppose. |

That place is more than worth the trip! |

Songtan, or the Mexican place? Do you recall the name of the Mexican place? |

Both, but particularly the Mexican place. Sadly, I don't remember the name. I'm looking into it though. |

It's called La Casa de los Mexicanos or something like that. Definitely La Casa something. |

So far, the best Mexican I had in Korea was in Busan at FN Tacos. Their food is incredible and the drinks are great, too. I would say that the food was better than a lot I had in the states, but that might just be my desperation for Mexican food speaking. |

What do you like about it? I think it's some pretty nasty stuff. I have a feeling that that place will bite the dust once the Hongdae TB opens. |

It was OK when the only other choice in the area was Casa Maya....and I even preferred that to be honest. |

Agree. I also hear a lot of pretentious and elitism in his article - what is he a culinary expert? His expectations are way too high. Korea is a long way from Mexico. I for one have been to "On the Border" at the COEX several times and have been plenty satisfied with the taste, price, and portions. I like their sizzling fajitas especially taste like LA. |
True, Korea is a long way from Mexico, but when a place has a born and bred Mexican chef then perhaps that place should be considered?

Yes this place is legit, and the Korean owner lived all around mexico. But many idiotic Korean customers complained the food wasn't the same type of food they ate in the states because they ate generic mexican food So they had to not make it as Mexican to please more customers. However it's the closest I've gotten to 'real' Mexican food.
The place is called Taco Rico. Gangnam station exit 8, somewhat near that Korean language hagwon. Walk out of exit 8, go straight for maybe 30 meters, turn left as if you were headed to the Korean language hagwon but follow that street all the way up until it bends to the left.

By the way, I plan to do a review of Mexican restaurants around Seoul. Once a week we'll go review the food and rate it via video, then rank our favorites. Then upload it to youtube. Anyone interested? No need to be an expert in food as the food should appeal to the average person, but I would prefer people who have tried 'real' Mexican food and doesn't look like a total dork lol.

I was fortunate enough to live around the corner from Taco Rico last year. The place is awesome. Great service, great food, fresh guacamole and 10% off if you order in Spanish. My only problem was visiting them too much and gaining a bit of weight. |
