tried searching for the answer to this question, but search didn't bring up anything.

anyway here's my question:

what type of ESL teaching would take place at a GEPIK high school? (15-18 year olds)

would it be mostly grammar or would there be conversational English as well?

thanks in advance

There isn't one answer to this question because GEPIK has many different types of high schools. The one that I work at has students at all levels and the goal in my classes is to give students a positive experience with English. The most common critique of my lessons is that they are "too hard." However, I've noticed that with the right bribes, the students will do the more challenging assignments and even enjoy them.

Some GEPIK teachers work less than I do, some work much harder. One of my friends works at a foreign language high school and she works her behind off teaching grammar and writing. How challenging your job will be depends on the school that you get.

thanks hun, it's an all girls school and i'm a very hard worker.

i'm also a newbie and haven't taught a great deal of grammar since doing my CELTA TEFL last year (1 year exactly) so i should start brushing up on that as well.

does GEPIK give you a curriculum to follow, or do you create your own lesson plans?

forget "GEPIK"

your responsibilities will depend on what your school and your coteachers want you to do. Schools will be different.

Some may want you to follow a set curriculum. However, from my experience, especially so on the HS level, you pretty much teach what you want/create your own lesson plans.

you should also forget about crap like grammar and writing. Generally speaking that's not what you were brought here for. They can learn grammar from their Korean teachers. If you focus on grammar they'll be as interested and excited about it as you were when you were learning it as a native speaker!

your responsibility is more along the lines of helping them with their English conversation. That's what you should focus your efforts on
(of course this will include many grammar elements, but it's not the main focus of the class)

(though as noted, it'll all depend on what your school/coteachers want, but odds are they'll want what I've noted)

and yes I teach at a gepik hs.

p.s. you're blessed to have girls. They're much better learners at the HS level, generally speaking than most boys.
