Last night I called the police to report a Korean person who was behaving in an anti-social manner. I didnt shout, I wasnt rude (as far as I can tell) but I also didnt speak Korean.
For some reason after about 5 minutes of trying to explain why this person was in the wrong, the police turned on me and started demanding my international licence because I had a motorbike! When I couldnt produce it or any of the other documents (which I had at home), they proceed to try to drag me off to the police station and only stopped when I dropped the complaint. When I tried to call my friend to interpret for me, they got really nasty and I ended up in the back of a squad car?!?. It was definite harassment as I had not done anything wrong.
At home I would have reported this but here, I think it would fall on deaf ears.
Im not asking for advice on this subject because I think it would be a waste of time to pursue it, Im just warning people to be wary of bigoted policemen in korea and making complaints because they dont seem to like it when youre complaining about one of them.

(background info - some *beep* knocked my very expensive/heavy bike over cos they wanted to park their car in my space outside of my chingus house with no regard for it or its expense and then left it lying to die on the road). Evil or Very Mad

sorry that happened to you OP, but yea most of us know not to get involved with the local authorities around here. They are bigoted, and it will not get you far to call another Koran out on some matter. It makes them look bad. As far as not having your documents on you, just remember them from now on and youre good.

yeah, word on that.
this place makes me shudder sometimes...

And to top this, two of my students just came into class (1 hour ago) with back, almost dislocated thumb joints becasue a hogwan teacher beat them 200 times each with a stick - for failing a test!
I told one of them to go to hospital becasue his hand was so swolen and black or tell his mom to call the police but he said he cant because his mother will know he was beaten and beat him again...
I really dont like to contradict other teachers (even if they are not colleagues) infront of students, but this is going to far.

I give up... Rolling Eyes

I call B.S. on YOUR story.

Anyway, isn't there like a new rule passed for police in this country - The more crime you stop, the more money you earn?
So it's far more believable that they would just find something to consider a crime regardless. And I think they would find it easier to pick on a foreigner than a brother.

You just have to wonder at the mentality here. The saddest thing I've ever heard a person say (in 54 years, and 41 countries) was when a former student told me: "I failed test, but was lucky, my mother only hit me 20-30 times."

Still a very long way to go.

yup, id run out the house quickly that night and didnt have anything on me. They called in and checked on my insurance/reg. and insisted on seeing my licence too.
Why do you always run out the house with your wallet? I tip my hat to you - you are a model citizen captain Korea.
Anyway, i never carry my passport or licence. If I lose them, they are difficult to replace. I can easily get a new arc, credit card etc so i always carry those as ID. I know this is a bit stupid maybe, but if the police want your licence back home, you have 3 days to produce it. Im not sure what the rules are here but I assumed it would be something to that effect.

In the past my freinds always told me they will take you home to get it if they are insistent enough - but hindsight is an amazing thing isnt it ...

Problem was, they thought it would be easier to drag me off instead. Im pretty sure (now that the red mist has gone), they did this just so that id drop my complaint.
Luckily, they just got bored and walked off in the end not doing anything but harrassing both parties and strutting about a bit.

yeah, ha haha haha - im an idiot.

Good for you all. Youve never just nipped out to the shops, picked up a man-un and went to get some bread?
I only went out for 5 minutes to pick something up - does that make me a complete retard? I didnt take my wallet/papers this time cos I didnt think i would need it in the 10 minutes I was out the house.

But, in my defence, in my country when you get stopped you DONT have to produce your licence on the spot - you can produce it anytime within a few days, I dont have a habit of carrying around my licence.
I dont have to produce at home - simple as.

Thats not the issue anyway. I complained that someone had dumped my bike and I got the brunt of it.
