I come from scotland, but well i consder my home town brighton since its the place ive lived in for the last 4 or 5 years when i was in the UK and its where all my friends are.
I now live in a town in jeollanam do.
In terms of nightlife, EVEN IF you consider gwangju... hell, even if you consider busan, brighton wins hands down. Id dare say it even beats seoul. I know some might balk at that, but brighton is one of the most radical interesting, diverse, and fantastic places in the UK. The music scene is top drawer and the clubs are really vibrant, energetic and fun whether its a 200 capacity dive, or a big 10,000 capacity event. It also has a rocking free party system along the south downs.
In terms of shopping as well, its pretty hard to beat. You wont get really upmarket stuff, but the vibe in brighton is very much not with chain stores. Its a city full of small quirky niche shopping. But what makes it awesome is that your niche will be catered for somewhere. Honestly i love brighton, it has a real character. Of course i dont like my cities TOO big so that might be why.
Where i live now on the other hand isnt all that interesting. Its better than i anticipated, but there aint much to do in the actual town i live in, and since im all about clubbing, gwangju kinda sucks pretty bad Nice scenery though if you like almost but not quite mountains. Plus i get to look at a nice wide river from my apartment which beats looking at the back of westgate road. |

The most telling thing, however, is that even if you think your hometown is more fun and interesting, WHERE ARE YOU NOW?

Forgot to mention the golfing.
Golfing here is expensive. Golfing back home was a great way to fill an afternoon with hijinks and there were dozens of courses around.
Oh and ease of doing do-it-yourself automobile and furnishing projects. |

I've lived in many great and many meh places. This is meh, but has its good points. I love to travel for extended periods. When I'm wrinkly an grey I'll have had lots of experiences both good and not so good.
Korea's not a terrible place. It'll probably be fun for a year or two, then I'll move to yet another country. It's like playing risk. |

Well said. Every country has its good and bad points. I don't think Korea is amazing, but it's fine for now. When it no longer holds my interest, I'll move somewhere else. |

It is an odd fact of this message board that you can give an honest opinion that one place is better than another and yet people will assume that this must mean that you dont like the place that isnt as interesting as the other.
Things arent quite as binary as some of you people seem to reason. I can prefer one place to another, but prefer also the fact that this place gives me a well paying responsibility-free life and access to facilities id be hard pushed to find where i previously lived. Just because brighton is objectively a better city than where i am now, it does not mean im saying where i live is horrible. Its not black and white.
I made much the same point in the globalisation thread (would you be here if the world hadnt tanked), and immediately people leap to the defence of korea as if saying its not my ideal is in some way suggesting that i hate it here. I find this a spectacular fallacy. You can prefer something to something else, and yet like both regardless.
Its genuinely amazing how personal and defensive some people can be about my right to hold a preference.
Once again, i may prefer snowboarding to playing computer games, but i nevertheless like to do both. I may prefer chocolate to cakes, but i will happily pig out on both. You can hold preferences whilst still liking both things. You just PREFER one of the things. |

Korean food > American food (also cheaper)

Just wanted to say that I could not disagree with any other single statement ever made on Dave's more that the above.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but are you going to back yours up, or just take the Tea Party route and say I'm wrong and leave it at that?
America has some great food, no doubt, but it's not American food. The best food back home comes from other cultures. What I consider American is the stuff at Applebees, Chilis, TGIFridays and crap like that. No thanks. For cost, taste, and overall eating pleasure, give me some Korean BBQ over a typical American diner any day. |
Note that I didn't say you were wrong; I just disagree (greatly). So yeah, everyone IS entitled to their opinion...
I would MUCH rather have diner food over Korean food. I'd rather have American BBQ over Korean BBQ any day. It's almost like comparing Japanese ramen to Korean instant ramyun to me. I'd probably prefer a good stack of pancakes and hash browns over 90% of dishes in Korea. Korean food, in MY opinion, is one of the most "eh" cuisines in the world.
And I guess we have different definitions of "American food". I don't consider "kimbap nara/cheonguk/etc." or "Nolbu" to encompass all of Korean food. So why are you including only random chain restaurants into your definition of American food? What about Southern comfort food? Or the New American wave of cuisine with top-notch chefs? |

+17 All these much better back home for sure, though most restaurants here are much cheaper than most restaurants back home (with less diversity, granted).

-3 Here on Jeju Island the weather is milder, the beaches nicer for swimming and smiles quicker and more frequent for me, than back home.

0 These are all so-so, in some ways better back home, in others not. If by clubs one means dance clubs then of course, but here on Jeju there are plenty of expat clubs with friendly and fun fellow waygook teachers whereas such community clubs back home are more geekish with less overall congeniality. The staff at my hagwon are mostly great where I had some real *beep* back home for coworkers and bosses. Humor is plentiful here as a stranger in a strange land! But less jokes for sure. Short weekend vacations are much better back home, but a one week vacation or more here rocks: Japan, New Zealand, Thailand, etc. |

The peace, cleanliness and quiet of home can get old really quick. Most people get married, have children and work until retirement under a pretty routine life.
Korea has plenty of faults but life here, not to mention in Asia, is certainly more interesting. |
Er, not sure if you noticed but that's what most people here do as well. |

The opportunity to travel in all these exciting SE Asian countries for pennies on the won, because of the kajillion vacation days that one has.
Me anyways. Really the ONLY reason.
But, everyone is really friendly to me here, so I like that too. |
