So my laptop's monitor is dead.
So I'm in the market for a new one. I do a lot of gaming and some video editing and photo work in adobe premiere and photo shop so I'm not looking for the cheapest thing so much as a really solid machine
At the same time I don't need to light my money on fire.
If I were back home I know exactly what I'd get an HP envy 14. I want something small enough it is reasonably portable so I' m not really interested in anything with a 17 inch display. Unfortunately i can't find one listed on omi though it is on Gmarket so I'm not sure if it's available at all.
Is it as simple as going around Yongsan with my korean friend and hoping for good haggling? |

Almost that simple.
Know what you want.
Know what the market price for it is.
You should be able to get very close to the internet price.

u can get a hp envy brand new for just a little bit more. about to buy one myself.
pros - looks..power
cons - runs hot (small price to pay for max power!) and battery life
for me the pros far outweigh the cons |

theyre built well and but dont they typically come in at 2.2-2.6 mil to buy and still have dual cores or the older core i7's? can pick up hp envy with a higher quad core i7 720m with ati 5830 graphics for 1.3 mil. that is almost half price of the core i7 mbp
why would u pay a mil more for less power? |

| Acer 3820tg. SHould be right up your alley. I have one, and it's pretty good. i5, 4 gb, 500 gb, ATI 5650 (really good card, 9000+ 3dmarks) 13.3 and less than 2 kg. Can't beat the specs. Only downside is the lack of optical drive. |

I have no idea how my laptop stacks up against Acer and other companies mentioned here. That said, I paid about 2.2mil 2 years ago for it and it still plays current games maxed out.
Sager NP 5793 - http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4235
I bought it from Xotic PC in Nebraska - http://www.xoticpc.com/ They specialise in performance/gaming PCs.
Again, I don't know how this stacks up to current models/different companies, but I was and still am very happy with this purchase, it handles any game I throw at it. |

If my laptop monitor dies, I'll still keep using it on the external monitor until I leave Korea. If my laptop dies altogether, I'll get a cheap desktop box to hook up to the external monitor. There is one thing I won't buy in Korea and that's a laptop. I too was shopping just because I'd love a high performance laptop, but paying 40% higher price for this big ticket item is out of the question when I know I'll get even more PC bang for my buck come March. I figure what is a 1.5m won laptop today will be a $600 to $700 machine in a few months back home. I'm seeing laptops with the same specs as my 2 year old laptop going for 850k to 1.1m won. It's usually something in the range of a core duo 1.8 to 2.2ghz with 2GB RAM and 160GB hard drive. A good machine, but not a high performance game machine like an i series.
If you really want a hot i-5 or i-7 series laptop now, then you may be looking at 1.8m to 2.2m won instead of $1000. |

I'm with you on the notebooks. Overpriced compared to the States. . Sandy Bridge notebooks are coming first quarter with good pricing according to anandtech. I almost pulled the trigger on an envy 14 with a radiance display. But they stopped shipping it now with that feature and it lacks usb 3.0. the new xps 15 is viable if it didn't look so fugly. Since there's nothing that completely fits my wantlist, I'm waiting. |

Shopping for a new laptop would be about as easy as you've mentioned. YOu need to look up how much what you want costs first and have a good idea of what you want so you don't get gipped when you're dealing with the sellers in Yongsan.
Have you considered repairing the broken screen? There are a number of Korean laptop repair websites that have parts for various manufacturers. Screens that are used could be available for your model.
PM me with the model you've got and some specs and maybe I can dig up some sites if you're interested. |
