What handheld GPS do any of you use here in Korea? About a decade ago, I bought a Garmin GPS III+ and it worked quite well for me here and still does an admirable job. However, I decided I want to get a new one, so I've been looking around. I need one that can graphically display Korea, is relatively fast acquiring satellites, easy to use, etc.

One I'm considering is the Garmin GPSMAP 62, but I haven't completely decided yet.

Im going to want to say smartphone on this but maybe you need more sensitive equipment?

At any rate, I can track my own movements to within a few meters. Its fun to turn on before you get really drunk and then check back the next day.

Interesting idea, but yeah, I need one that's a little more specialized for trail work, as I will use it for my research.

I use an etrex Vista HCx. If I'm not moving in a vehicle it picks up the satelites within about half a minute from a cold start. If I'm in the same place (or nearby) where I turned off the GPS, then it often picks up the satellites in a few seconds. If I turn it on while in a moving vehicle, then it can take up to 2 minutes to get a fix on my position.

If you get a Garmin, make sure that it's one of the H models. They have SiRF star III microcontrollers in them. I think that all models produced by Garmin have them, but some older models have the original Garmin chips. I used to have a Vista Cx as well. I've been in the same places with the Vista HCx and the points are a lot more accurate, and it pick up the satellites a lot better.

The downside of the Vista is that it has no port for an external antenna. All the same, I've never needed one.

What do you want to do with the GPS and what price range where you looking at? Really, I think that most of the handheld mapping models are good.

I'll be using it for the same thing I used my old GPS III+ for, which is verifying historic routes and setting waypoints at historic things I've found. I have specifically been using it for my research into the U.S. 1871 military action in Korea, which I've been doing for the past fifteen years; however, I want to re-do a lot of it with a more accurate unit. My price range is in the area of $300 (I'll get one back in the States this winter).

I still have my Garmin, but its slow as hell. I'm much happier with my Galaxy S smartphone which has a GPOS built in. And the maps are better and more detailed whereas the Garmin maps were difficult to keep up with the massive changes in roads here in this land
