I went through the same thing last night. I installed kies (never needed it before), and got a notice that my firmware was available for update. I excitedly updated and frantically went through the settings to be disappointed when my firmware was still 2.1. Immediately after the first firmware update, another popped up. I got my hopes up only to be let down again.

Sad

It's just utterly baffling to me how one of the biggest electronics company's in the world can be so inept.

Don't announce dates if you can't stick to them!!!

For Galaxy S Owners

Does Kies suck? I just watched this video and it seems to lock up.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JOJgFBiQJM

Do you have to use Kies, or is there an alternative?

What problems is Froyo 2.2 expected to fix, or how do you expect it to make your user experience better?

Would you recommend the Galaxy S, or does it have some problems that you only discovered after buying it?

iPhone 4 or Galaxy S?

Any other advice for a newbie smart phone shopper?

(I am going to be doing email, web surfing, no games, and shooting some random videos.)

The linked YouTube video was from July. I haven't had any problem with KIES, before or after the recent KIES update. Except that Froyo hasn't been available through it yet, but I also read the Nov. 15 8pm announcement from Samsung. Let's hope so!

despite having the biggest potential as a smartphone with amazing hardware the galaxy s has a few bugs due to some shoddy software implementation from samsung. current major bugs which supposedly get fixed with this update include

dodgy gps...its slow and often plops u on a street or 2 away. not a biggie for most but frustating for me as i drive around abit here in seoul and sometimes wanna glance at it for on the spot decision making about what lanes/roads to take.

response lag..sometimes (for me a couple of times a week, my wife alot more..varies for diff users) the screen hangs and becomes totally unresponsive to your actions. its like the processor is maxed out, but it isnt. then 30 seconds later it zips through all the actions u attempted to do. annoying when it happens.

o/s fragmentation...there are over 50 android phones each running various versions of android from 1.6 to 2.2 and soon 2.3. this has become a headache for app development and has caused some compatibility issues. sometimes they simply dont work or crash because it isnt properly programmed for ur device. however ive found the major apps ur gonna want to use run fine.

there are already fixes for the gps and lag problems if your in the usa/europe or want to root ur phone (android equivalent of jail breaking on iphone). and i think app compatibility for galaxy s will massively improve now the galaxy s has sold bucket loads. if i were u i'd check this thread and see what users report after froyo 2.2 lands.

in terms of taking video and photos the galaxy s is nice and so is the iphone from what ive seen. where the galaxy s shines is native div x/avi/mkv playback. really nice to watch stuff on the subway. very convenient as no converting is necessary. just drag n drop ur tv shows/movies from any computer (after u install the driver)

overall id say the iphone and galaxy s are near identical. a couple of mates have iphone 3gs and 4 and they're extremely happy. and they are slick devices for sure but the biggie for me was i hate itunes so i went for this.

honestly id say after the galaxy s 2.2 update comes out you wont be disappointed. but forget kies, except for firmware updates you dont really need it. i just installed the driver and manage my files through my computer. very easy..just drag n drop Smile and if u do get the galaxy s make sure to get launcher pro...makes the user interface soooo much better!

all of what spanky1off said is true. the question of iPhone or Galaxy S is really just which do you prefer, because in almost every category that they are different, the difference is negligible and totally personal preference. I like Android because of drag and drop movie play and Swype, but Swype will be on iPhone soon enough and the iOS interface is a lot cleaner.

I own a 4th gen iPod touch that I got before I thought I could get a Galaxy S, so I am really seeing the pros and cons of both styles of OS. in general, I prefer iOS4 but like I said, the swype and drag/drop play is what sold me Very Happy

I am learning a lot about this phone just by watching Youtube vids. Here are some good ones:
