| Do you think principles matter? I, in retrospect, had thought I was standing up for a principle. This principle was that I will not be bullied or looked down upon by an employer, and this maybe even in a discrimminatory sense. I felt the employer was singaling me out because I was foreign, even after I'd been at the job 10 mos and had great rapport with the former co-workers and the children themselves. |
You stood up for EGO, yours was bruised. In blind anger you didn't think about the consequences of your actions or the responsibilities to the animals. Pride goes before a fall, remember? In hindsight you know you should have worked the last two months, saved your money and moved onto a new job. You reacted out of emotion, not on principle. There was little reflective thought in what you did. Learn from it. Hell, go back and get that dog! (it may still be at the shelter) Good luck whatever. |
OP, If you want your dog/friend back, I'll help you. I know you're hurtin' inside (dog, too!). My email is [email protected]. Take care |

Now back home, I ponder. Only the future brings to light what the past has wrought in the dark, meaning, I'm trying to make sense of it all. So my real intent was to see if anyone here has ever had similar experiences, i.e., standing up for principles and losing something dear to them in the process.
Or is it just Ahn Su Kyi?
In other words, I faced democratic principles too. |
What an outrageous thing to say! Do you really think you are comparable to Ahn Su Kyi? Don't stop there mate - where is the comparison to Nelson Mandela? Ghandi? Salvador Allende? Jesus Christ? - I hope your dad gives you the kick up the arse you so richly deserve.
Now the bollocking has been given out, onto some proper advice from me.
You aren't a failure but you are setting yourself up for failure by taking on so many pets whilst being employed on an annual contract that can be terminated at any time. Some things, you just can't do whilst doing this job in this part of the world. I know it is nice to have pet animals living with you and I know why you do it but this lifestyle is not really compatible for keeping animals. I bet any money you screeched at your bosses about your pet animals and what was to become of them, I also bet any money that they laughed their heads off and called you a softy once you left the building.
If you want to take care of animals, best thing to do is stay at home where you can live in your house and take care of your animals and live your life. There is no guarantee in any part of Asia that we can stay here ad infinitum and live our lives the way we want. All it takes is a economic meltdown in the west and the chances of us being put on that plane for back home increase. If you love Taiwan then marry a local girl and invest in your life there by buying a house and a scooter and then you can have all the dogs and cats you want living with you.
Good luck with your life, but you aint no Ahn Su Kyi because you take care of a few mutts - let me tell ya! |

OP:
I honestly wish you the best of luck and feel bad for your circumstances.
HOWEVER
The boss didn't fire you, didn't treat you particularly poorly (according to your post), he/she just decided not to renew your contract.
The only negative part was that he gave you a white lie for a reason. Rather than saying "we've decided we don't like your teaching anymore" they went with the much more face-saving "we LOVE you! but outside forces prevent us from keeping you...".
And then you quit with 2 months left of your current contract. Honestly, you are much more in the wrong here than your boss was. You should have spent those last 2 months (that YOU agreed to teach) searching for a new job that would allow you to uphold your responsibilities to your pets.
Long story short: I feel bad for you, but you didn't fail... YOU made a bad decision and YOU were in the wrong, not your boss. I hope that you learn from it. |

| presently on the last 2 months of 12 months in a taiwanese company and all I can say is taiwanese are nice people but when it comes to business and management they are the worst. Thought I would never rate korean bosses above anyone but if ever they is a problem in my company the taiwanese managers always take the other taiwanese employees side and always make choices on what looks like the fastest way to grab cash. I guess I should say they are very similar to some Korean bosses. My fellow employees are totally fake , smile to your face and insert knife in back. |

Just wondering why you didn't save any money in 3.5 years and why you didn't do any networking so that someone, a friend or colleague, could have hooked you up with another job?
Since you love amimals, think about becoming a vet or working on a farm back home. |

My Korean story is very very familer.
Although, things didn't happen quite the same exact way; it did involve the principal of walking away from bad morals and yes at one point, there was some lack of means.
It is bothersome to leave your dog behind ( it only has to happen once, before you vow never do it again, (regardless of your own circumstances with money, visa or whatever. It is just too hard to think of what could happen to your dog. I am surprised you didn't just put your dog on the plane with you.
But, why look at it as a failure? Obviously, it wasn't all your fault
( some of it was your boss). It was one experience in one place. *Tawain.
Who knows? There is way more to life than that..really. |
