I am having an absolute hair tugging nightmare with getting my CRB notarised at the moment.
Heres the story:
Sent my notarised copy of degree certificate (5 form solictor in Leeds) and original CRB certifiacte to FCO.
They apostilled my degree OK. but they sent back my CRB certificate un-apostilled with a letter attached saying it needs to be notarised by a solicitor or notary public.
so i went to my solicitor today and he said he CANNOT notarise an original certifcate as he did not issue it.
I took it to another solicitor and he said the same thing. both sounded very confused when I said the FCO asked for my ORIGINAL document to be notarised.
So I rang the FCO to explain all this (after 30mins on hold) and they said they cannot do anything until my original CRB is stmaped and signed as being authentic.
I then rang up the Criminal Records Bureau and explained all this to them, and the lady on teh phone said that in 28 years of working for the CRB she's never heard of anyone needing the ORIGINAL doucment to be notarised, I explained that it was because there is NO signature on it that the FCO would not apostille it. Again, she said CRB checks never have original signatures on.
I am at my wits end!
the FCO will NOT apostille it until it is notarised. the solicitor will NOT notarise as it is an original document. and the CRB have never heard anyone needing it to be notarised! Its as if im the only person to ever need this doing, do thousands of uk teachers not get this done every year?!!
My CRB was issued by Criminal Records Checked Ltd - I have emailed them to ask if they notarise it (they use an 0800 number, which costs alot on my pay-as-u-go. otherwise id call!)
If they cannot help, then I really do not know what to do, bar doing what others have done and ordering a whole new certificate from Disclosure Scotland and asking for it with notarisation.... But if i do that then I'll miss out on my job in Korea and have to start applying all over again! as well as take back my resignation from my current work!
Anyone had similar experience with a CRB thats not notarised and having trouble getting the ORIGINAL certificate notarised?
thanks,
Tom
ps, sorry for loooong first post! |

I had an enhanced CRB that I had to get notorised by a notary public. I used this guy. I'm afraid the FCO will not apostille an unsigned CRB and all CRB's issued in England, to my knowledge are un-signed.

Notary publics charge a lot more though, but it was the only way to get it done.
since then due to a long story, I have to order a Disclousure Scotland. If you can wait for 2 weeks, it will be the much cheaper option for you. |

| Explain to the notary public that you require the document to be certified not notarised. That's what I did when I took mine in and they were reluctant to do it. You could, of course, take it to the solicitors around the corner from the FCO. |

thanks for your reply - this sounds like my case - mines enhanced disclosure from a job i did in August - in a way, im trying to save hassle by just getting the existing CRB apostilled, but it seem Ive made my life 10 times more difficult!
Atkinson charge minimum 70! but, I cant really wait 2 weeks for Discolusre Scotland, im longing the Korean school as it is, I;m worried theyll get impatient and get someone else....
I'll call Atkinsons today, and also these guys http://www.notarypublicleeds.com/contactus.html
and do a little price comparison.... but yeah, 70 is steeeeep, but its better than shelling out 30 for Dis. Scot one and losing my job i guess!

Well, I went to two solicitors in Leeds and they both said No, which confused me as the FCO are adament the CRB needs to be signed even though it is common practice for the CRB to not be signed... bizarre system imo. Cant reach MK, otherwise i would do
Looks like i gotta take that 70 fee on the chin and just do it.
Tahnks for all the help too - at least ive got a way out of all this now, been going nuts trying to figure out why the system is so awkward!

Crazy way of doing it. You should spend no more than 10 quid. If not, you can send it to a solicitors in MK - I'll find the link in a bit to a place that charges 40 odd quid plus another 28 for the processing fee at the FCO. They process it and take it to the FCO and send it back. This will be cheaper than how you are currently proposing to do it. If not, try another solicitor. Be firm that that's what you need done. |

| Put simply an apostille certifies the signature on a document, not the actual content. Some ACPO criminal record checks have the signature of one of their officials and this can be apostilled. Those which don't cannot be apostilled without a solicitor or notary signing it. We can get this done and have it apostilled no problem, just go to www.apostilles.org and follow the order process. |

Nice bit of advertising. You could do that, or you could just search for a solicitor/notary public that doesn't charge the earth for doing it. If anyone is planning on using your services, they are paying way, way over the odds. |

| Thanks for your comment. I don't think 75 is a lot to pay for notarisation AND apostille. Maybe you misunderstood our pricing policy??? Don't think you'll find anyone doing both for less than that price. |

I understood it fine. Considering it's 28.80 at the FCO for the apostille and there are solicitors out there that charge 5 - 10 quid for notarising, I'd say you are charging vastly over the odds. It's even more expensive if you're doing your background check as there is a notary at the Basic Disclosure who will authenticate the document for free leaving you only to apostille the document for 28.80 at the FCO. You may pay a few pounds extra for envelopes and postage to the FCO, but if you go to the right notary publics, you will pay way less than what you are charging. If your company will notarise and apostille more than one document for that price, then it's a really good deal. If not, it's bloody expensive. When I had my Disclosure notarised and apostilled in 2009, I paid the grand total of about 35 quid. I could get both documents done for less than you seemingly charge for just one.
The issue with the above is, of course, that you need to find a notary who isn't a thieving scumbag. |

28.80 for apostille + 10.00 or thereabouts for the signature and stamp = a smidgen less than forty quid. You charge somewhere in the region of 35 quid to take it to the FCO and post it back? Still seems a little excessive if you ask me. What do you charge for sending it abroad? |

| For most people this has to be seen in the context of having to get it done quickly either whilst abroad or taking time out from work and paying the train fare to the FCO. Suddenly it is starting to look like remarkably good value. DHL to most countries is 30 some others 50. |

So you don't charge extra for sending it abroad? If not, that is good value to get it done quickly whilst being abroad. I still maintain it's cheaper to do it yourself if you are still in the UK with negligible time delay. |
