The man buys the house, the woman the furnishings. Don't bother with what anyone says, talk to your wife to be. And if her family is soaking you, don't marry her.

When I got married, it was a huge affair. Her father worked on base at Camp Stanley and he arranged everything to be held at Yongsan- Married at the Post Chapel, dinner at the Hartsel House and a reception at the Navy Club. It was really nice. He had connections with the director of gate security, so we were able to bring in over 100 of her family and friends. The unit I was assigned to provided an honor guard at the end of the ceremony and the unit cooks assisted with cooking the food. Since there was no on base housing for soldiers E-5 or below at the time, we were given a housing referral and BAH to pay for the cheonsae payment. Then we went to the Four Seasons furniture store to buy furniture.

However, her funeral a few years was more elaborate and a lot more expensive. The family opted for a burial, not cremation and a lot more people came than during the prayer ceremony and for the gravesite ceremony where a local priest gave her last rites in Korean and English. Luckily I was a soldier at the time and the Army paid for most of the stuff that the family couldn't afford. She is interred on a hill overlooking Seocho Gu.

I think the best thing for you two is to find out what�s best for the both of you first and then try to compare it with what her family expects.
