Hi,

My husband and I have been in Korea for about 8 months now at a Hagwon and would like to stay another year. I was wondering what a fair pay raise would be? We would also like to go home for a couple weeks in between contracts to visit family. We would go home separately to ensure that our classes could be covered by other teachers. Is this fairly normal (going home)? Will we have our vacation home flights paid for? Is it a paid vacation or not? I know every Hagwon, and every situation is different, but any insight or personal experience would be greatly appreciated.

Just a little background for negotiating salary: We both work 24-25 teaching hours a week, but are at the school much longer. We usually put in 8 hour days or more. Our Hagwon is crazy for giving teachers administrative work, which is neglected a lot by other teachers. We always have our work finished on time. The Hagwon offers some 'special' classes for the 'gifted' students that only foreign teachers teach. Out of the four foreign teachers, my husband and I are the only ones who teach them as of recent. So we definitely would not be accepting anything below W100, 000/month but more would be VERY nice.

Thanks in advance for any help!

100k to 200k would be reasonable with a rountrip airfare. If they hire someone new they will have to pay recruitment fees and don't know who they are going to get, so if you are good you are in a strong position. The sticking point might be the 2 weeks trip instead of 1 week, maybe 1 will be unpaid...it's all down how valuable you are and your negotiating skills.
