I recently left Korea and have been back in the states now for three weeks. According to the contract, the school has 30 days to refund your deposit (minus what you owe of course). I recently contacted my co-teacher 3 days ago by email, asking him when I could expect my money back and have received no response.

Given horrible past experiences regarding getting paid at my school, coupled with a past history of severe incompetence/laziness/malfeasance on the part of my former co-teacher I have a feeling I may not hear back from him at all. If this is the case, if I don't hear back from him, and a month passes, and I still have yet to receive my deposit, what should I do? Who should I call?

I understand that according to some, Dain Bae doesn't care too much about helping teachers so if that's true, who does, or who should I turn to? According to the contract, the school is obligated to return this money within thirty days, but who can enforce this? Thank you.

How many of you received your deposit back within the thirty day time period?

Call him on Skype. You still have his cell number? Harass him until you get the money back. Also, can you find the number of the local education office supervisor? The squeeky wheel gets the grease.

Yes, go over his head. Don't waste anymore time with someone who's not helping you. District supervisor, and then if no response, name and shame your school, and get another poster in your district to get the district supervisor's bosses number. No response, then go to the labor board.

Good luck.

But what if they don't speak English? I just called the education office and spent 5 minutes just finding someone that could speak the language. Should I call back later, ask for the district supervisor, and hope he speaks English?

This.^ And it's not the co-teacher's job to get the deposit back. All he can do is remind the school.
