| I am hearing from my recruiter that due to budget restrictions that EPIK will pay a MAX of 2.2 for 2011. My question is has anyone received an offer from EPIK higher than 2.2 ? I qualify for 2.3 but am being offered 2.2 MAX. |

they typically don't start people at more than 2.2 unless you are a direct hire by the school.
There are lots of people making more than 2.3 (who have been at their schools for a while).
Your recruiter is handing you a simple line (he probably assumed you had no way to check or confirm) rather than go to the lengthy process of explaining what they are really doing and why you probably won't get what you think should.

I hesitate to challenge the almighty Ttompatz (and I do mean that respectfully), but shouldn't they pay whatever your pay level actually is?
I got hired for SMOE at 2.3, which was the proper pay level due to my previous experience. This was before the semi-merger of course, but I can't imagine that either entity wouldn't pay you exactly what the pay scale says they should pay unless some drastic change is afoot. Or perhaps the recruiter is just full of it. |

Feel free to challenge me any time - I have been known to make a mistake from time to time but in my experience over the last decade or so....

| Well the more feedback on this the better so thanks to both of you. Talked with 2 recruiters. 1 says Budget freeze at 2.2 and the other says No. Go Figure~~~ |

Im qualified at 2.3 as well.
Hopefully that wont be a deterrent in my placement. lol |

Wages have been effectively frozen since 2000 anyway.
The vast majority of eslers have earned no more than 2.2 base pay for the past 10 years.
Nothing will change until China starts offering more. |

So nobody seems to have been offered a contract renewal or a new job at EPIK at 2.3 or greater.
Even though they are qualified.............

| I came here a year ago and my starting salary was more than 2.3. I re-signed and it's still above that. They've reduced the vacation time, but if they're freezing salaries, I haven't heard about it. |

| This is not making much sense to me. The recruiter I'm dealing with is a reputable one. Very reputable. Are they getting kick backs for signing on people at lower salaries???? I am perplexed but am considering changing recruiters at this point. |

I heard the PRC's next 5-year economic plan is going to be geared towards raising standards of living (as well as sustained economic growth obviously!). One would have thought that this would lead to more people being lifted into the middle classes, and eventually this should drive up demand for ESL teachers. Probably medium-long term stuff but I guess China's sustained growth is probably improving the market slowly.
I haven't got much of an appreciation of the market though - has it been improving much over the last 5 years?

| Wages are frozen, benefits are going down, vacation days fewer more desk warming. Expectations are going up. More interferiance from the Ivory Tower. |

If this is still correct you'll see 2.3 equates to level one in Busan, the next level down is 2.1. There is no 2.2 in Busan. Where are you working?
It wouldn't surprise me EPIK wants lower level teachers so they can reduce costs. |

| Level 1+ is two years as a level 1 now? It was only one year as a level 1 when I became a 1+ a couple of years ago. And the salaries haven't changed at all in 3 years. I honestly do think 2011 is the last big year for EPIK. |

I worked at my public school for 3 years and was told that I maxed out the pay scale (2.3) and a raise wouldn't be possible. Then after the third year they got a new teacher from the states for 1.8 or whatever the lowest wage was.
After the second year of no raise, I still stayed tight with the students and did my lessons well, but I didn't make or do anything even slightly above what was required. |
