EPIK just acccepted me for february, 2011. I am 51 years old. Are there many over 50 teachers teaching in S. Korea? I will likely be in Incheon or Seoul. Thanks!

There are certainly some. I had a few on my EPIK orientation last year.

Two of them are doing MA/TESOL right now in the hopes of getting Uni jobs in the future.

There is no reason why older people can not be allowed to teach in Korea or anywhere else. The problem sadly is that that it is almost impossible to prove and it is not as scrutinized as gender or race discrimination.

EPIK doesn't discriminate but JET does. You have can't be over 42 to be in the JET program.

But then again the US military also discriminates on age. You can't be over 42 to be any of the US Armed Services.

Quite a few countries have aged based criteria for teaching. It's all a requisite for getting a work Visa. The Middle East and some Asian countries included. Korea also has a certain age that you have to be under to be accepted.

Who cares about the JET program the glory days are long over in Japan, sadly it's the same in Kore

I'm 49 and I teach at an English Village near Daegu. There are seven other teachers here who are 50 or older. Give it a shot!

I have been accepted by EPIK. More than likely I will be in Incheon or Seoul. I am hoping to find a nice expat or teacher community my age. Thanks!

How much were you offered in salary if you don't mind my asking? I've been told there are budget freezes.

Came to Korea when I was 39, am now 51. Shocked Crying or Very sad

PLEASE SHOOT ME.

No wait, 12/21/2012 is not so far off. And I have several students who are
of Mayan background. One is from El Salvador. The last 4 numbers of his school Id are 4004. And he is 4 on the list. We call him the death angel. He said he will take me to heaven on 12/21/2012. Becasue my birthday is 4/13 and in 2012 that is a Friday, I am hoping he will take me then. He is thinking about it. Very Happy

Providing that my documents are legit, which they are, I'll get between 2.1 and 2.2. I only have substitute teaching experience and not full time experience. Do you think I could do better in pay? The one issue I have with my contract is that I need the summer break and winter break off to come back to the US. They tell me I must stay with only 10 days vacation per year. Even though I may not do a 'camp", I have to stay at the school. However, the recruiter did say once I'm placed I could try to work something out with my school of assignment. This may be the only thing that keeps me from doing this. The reason I picked EPIK as my number one choice was because I did not think that we had to stay for the summer and winter camps.

sluggo,
I recieved an email from EPIK about two days after I submitted my application stating that I passed the application stage. I then also recieved the request for the interview. The interview occured 4 days later. I then recieved the acceptance from the interview the very next moring. Are you applying through EPIK. Any recruiter just adds to the length of time to get to EPIK. You may go there directly yourself. Each recruiter evaluates each application before submitting them to EPIK. Most of them also have an interview before the actual interview with EPIK. Good Luck.

unfortunately I used a recruiter. I had a Korean Consulate in my hometown. I didn't even know that. lol

But I passed the interview and hopefully I can get a contract. I am working at a high school now, but I expect mass layoffs next year. So it would be nice to get hired. lol
