From Korea Times:
"Lee, who has been keen on strengthening English education at public schools, said English classes are improving on the back of native teachers and high-quality Korean teachers.
Still, the education minister said the government sees no need to further increase the number of native English teachers from the current level as Korean teachers will eventually replace them in the long-term."

the Korean teachers won't/can't replace us. There will always be a need for native speakers. Most Korean teachers i have known have been utterly inept. |

Agreed. On the rare occasion you find a KT with excellent English..they nullify it by lacking teaching skills.
Sure, the fuhrer might succeed in eliminating foreigners from the govt schools, but demand will always be high in the private sector...because parents know that the waeguk is best. |

Believe it or not the current kindy/elementary school generation will speak English quite well in another 20 years. The ones that become English teachers will have completed exchanges to other countries and studied strictly in the English language at university. THey will replace us and the moment they do the only market left will be private niche markets. It is one of the reasons why I'm thinking about NOT pursuing education (TESOL) as I am going to be in Korea long-term and do not have the luxury or migrating to developing countries that hunger for native speakers (CHina, Vietnam etc). Even if I have an F series visa I simply do not trust the situation and have a feeling that in another 20-30 years most of these 5 month vacation uni job/cushy "English conversation teacher" jobs will be gone with the remaining being 10x more competitive as it is now with equal to or crappier benefits.
Koreans are getting better at English and I hate to sound like a negative nancy but it is only a matter of time. The moment we are replaceable with their own nationals we'll be shown the door. It wouldn't be any different in any other country with a job that requires an easily replaceable skill set. |

There will always be some demand for native teachers, how much demand is open for debate I suppose.
Often when Koreans speak English well enough to replace us, they choose to move abroad or work in something other than teaching.
I've met many Korean teachers who spoke near perfect English but they chose not to teach it. Either they were paid too little or they were over-burdened with "extra" duties, so they chose to be a homeroom teacher
or something else.
Many realize that teaching English is not such a great job after all. |

Attrition is not the same as being fired.
Every year, NETs quit. He is talking about replacing those who quit/leave with Korean teachers. I'm not going to argue the merit of this. But, you are really stretching to say he, "wants to fire us."
FAIL on your subject title. |

So many of those Koreans who study abroad and are proficient in English wind up staying abroad. that's the brain drain that's often talked about here. |

When my co-teacher started at my public school. She was told by all the other KET's in town not to teach the kids to much. Becuase, it would make everyone else look bad. |

This is not news that we will be replaced....this has always been the plan from Day 1. Why do you think they are having us teach English? Not to give us jobs but to have their population become more proficient at English so THEY can take over. |

Its about money. Always has been...
Why pay a foreigner 2x (or more) when you could train a local to do the same for less? And get them to wipe your bottom if you asked them to? -metaphorically speaking, of course -
The "English budget" dried up and disappeared into Samgyupsal dinners and golf trips for the Principal a long time ago. Unfortunately instead of calling them out on it, they will just cut the Englishee tiichaa out of the picture. |

Unfortunately, they are (or have been) trying to 'learn English' incorrectly. How many times have you read on this site students would argue with the professor about how to learn a language?
Whats more, due to the economic insecurity back home, they have a false sense of confidence. That will evaporate and we will be in demand should Asia have a second IMF... |
