| Cant imagine it would cost near to 10 grand. Maybe half that. |
Seems like 7 months of travel to me, plus flights to and from Australia; you reckon you can do that on 5 grand? ( about $24 a day excluding flights), I'd say 10 grand at least. |
If not doing PNG and Aust then 5 grand should be cool. (What flights?) |

yeah, i'm looking to avoid flights if at all possible. i know about the Dili-Darwin run, i have no interest in spending $600 on a 40 minute flight. PNG and Oz are most likely out, at least for the time being.
if i can do this for well under 10 grand, all the better. i'm pretty sure 5 grand isn't doable though, i'm sure i'll make a few splurges along the way.
i know two weeks is a bit much for East Timor. it just seems like, after going all that distance overland to get there, i may as well check it out a bit, maybe head out to Jaco on the eastern tip if i can. |

| I was in East Timor this past summer. When I was there, I met two other tourists, total. The one guy had made it all the way to Dili from Scotland without flying, so he was very interested in making it on to Australia without having to fly and did everything he could, but in the end he had to fly as it was the only viable option. |

So how are you budgeting for this? Have you traveled before? It seems you're doing a lot of traveling, not just going on a long trip. It can be costly getting to from train/bus stations, getting to hostels/hotels by taxis/tuk-tuks trying to rip you off, spending on bus, train and ferry journeys, spending on little trinkets/mementos, going on tours and adventure activities. Staying in the cheapest of hostels can wear you down; I'm not into that anymore. You'll have to watch your money very closely. Your trip sounds different to say, shacking up in a cheapie beach bungalow in some tourist ghetto living off nothing but bottles water and banana pancakes.
Sounds like fun; wish I was back in my 20's without a care in the world. I'm having a mid-life crisis hiking trip in Nepal for 2 months with a cruise around SE Asia for a few weeks when my contract is up. |

I think as long as you have an idea of exactly where you want to go...which you do...and are able to budget strictly for each destination you should be fine, I've done this kinda thing in a few places before and got by but it imperative you do your research before you leave.
Sounds like a monster trip, I'm off to Oz when I finish here via SE Asia so if you want some company on the trip I would definitely be interested...overland is so much more fun than jumping on a plane to get everywhere. |
