Is it just me or does anyone else go through the I HATE EVERYTHING phase about 8 months into thier contract?

I hate korean drivers, I hate my director, I hate my co-worker(american), I hate speaking English, I hate not having anyone other than my co-worker to speak English to.

I am in small town Taebaek....beautiful mountains...that wore off about 2 months ago...I hate the freakin mountains.

No movie theater, no swimming pool, no western restuarants(dominos only) no western food(oh wait the korean italian restuarant where we'll put a kilo of cheese on pasta wave a tomato over it and call it italian) nothing to do, winter here sucked big time. Oh wait in the mountains it actually gets cold, and wet, and snowy. Virtually a prisoner in your own apartment.

Twisted Evil I hate the Korean women I have shagged....I hate the korean doctors...(whats in the injection? eyes me up and down and says knowingly MEDICINE)

Korea to me is technologically modern but socially like the USA of the 1950's very image conscious, alot of keeping up with the joneses, the pursuit of the almighty dollar is paramount. What the hell is goiing to happen to them when the sexual revolution hits?

ARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

I've been to Taebaek. You've done well to hold on for 8 months.

By that point, everyone on this board will be snuggling up to a dirt blanket, and the kids you (might) be teaching will have retired.

Indeed.

Do what you have to to survive. Finish the contract and move on.

Joe feels vaguely similar (not about western food, but about the locals in his particular city and the foreinger population here).

I get that every once in a while but not because of Korea; it can happen anywhere. I think sometimes people blame Korea for these moods when really they can and do strike anywhere. Back home it's just depression but here it's Korea's fault.
When I get in those moods:
I hate the air
I hate the fact that most music isn't made by musicians
I hate how TIME and Macleans and other magazines are written
I hate the fact that education is often based on shiny credentials
I hate the fact that I forget words that I've learned before
And so on...

Dude! You're right on schedule. Classic 6-9 month culture shock reaction.

It does go away/subside... but for me it took a lot longer than a couple of months to shake. I still get flashbacks.

the same thing happened to me

IN VANCOUVER

which, if you listen to the right sources (who are all full of _____), as a city, it's god's gift to everything.

relax, read a book, get drunk... all will be well soon.

Well you certainly choose the backwoods of Korea to live and work. You do have the lovely Kwangdonland casino handy, though that is only worth one visit. Nice place to visit, hate to live there. Refering to your post though, yes, every so often it just gets to you and you wake up wanting to scream at everyone and everything Korean, made worse by your relative isolation. Smile

Thanks. ^^

Actually I wanted to expand on that TIME and Macleans writing style...has anyone noticed that they all start out the same? If they were writing on Korea's new economy, it wouldn't start out as:

"Korea's economy has recently been..."

No, they like to be clever, so they always write it like this:

"Miss Jihae Lee, 24, is excited. She's just bought herself a new phone and is sending text messages to her friends. She also just bought herself a new dress and blah blah blah.....blah blah blah (more stuff about her friends), finally - Jihae Lee is the poster girl of the new Korean economy, a dynamic force in stark comparison to the Korea we all knew from the 1950s, blah blah blah... (now we're finally on the subject)"

I understand why they write like that but they all write the same and it's irritating to have a few paragraphs of meaningless filler before the main subject.

Now that I'm on this I Hate subject I'm starting to get excited. Expect more...

I sometimes get that feeling here, but then I think of home and the rut I was in there. The feelings goes pretty quickly after that thought.

It sounds familiar to me Grotto! I just finished 9 months here, and I've been feeling a lot of the same things you have. I really hate my job (I have a boring office chained-to-a-cubicle type job) and I'm tired of having shallow relationships with people that seem to based solely on their need for English practice. I'm having a hard time keeping my chin up too, but let's remember that it's only a few more months! We've already come a long way...just a little longer.

Think of the cheap soju.
Think of the cheap and good food.
Think that the summer is almost here and it is only getting hotter from here on in.
Think of the vacation you can take at the end of your year.
Think of the people that do keep you sane.
Call your mother and tell her you love her.

The cheap soju is part of the problem.....I have pretty much exhausted the restuarants here...I do have a few fav's but most are pretty much run of the mill. I miss the absolutely fabulous Galbi restuarant in Suwon very close to Kyongidea university. Most of my funds at the end of the year are going to student loans.....out here no one keeps me sane...my co-worker has been pulling some pretty dodgy crap lately. Yeah calling Mom is always a pick up...she is actually coming in a Month to visit for a couple of weeks so thats something to look forward to.....8 down 4 to go only 120 days give or take....2 holidays in April I am going to go to Kangnueng or Donghae and hang at the beach...oh yeah they have an emart there too.
