Haha...So many extreme comments and so much ridiculously incorrect information floating around here about working in China, which is fine by me.
These days, when I have a bad day in China, I come onto Dave's to read about life in Korea and then I remember why I left Korea and how much better my life is here. |

Yup. Living close to work is ideal. If you're happy, that's all that counts. |

Why don't you correct the misinformation that is given?
Korea isn't for everybody. I lived in China for two years and would never do it ever again. Visit, yes. Live, no possible way. However, it did make me a more tolerable person. |

I was actually considering China to teach after hearing people talk it up on here--never paying attention to the salary-- but after looking at the exchange rate that comes to around (average) $750-$900/month (5,000-6,000RMB) 
Most jobs I saw were offering that. I just couldn't even do it.
When I heard people saying that wages were going up I thought they were already hovering around $1,300-$1,500/month---Let's just say there's a long way to go before you see any amount of people leaving here for there. (which also begs the question: why is Korea paying such high salaries, comparatively speaking, to surrounding Asian countries???)
I'd like to hear from people already teaching there, and how in the world are they saving anything? Is it even worth it? |
The money is lower but so is the cost. The stress is lower and what is expected is lower, no office hours, no deskwarming, no crap! If you want to earn 6000 RMB a month then you can, but if you want to earn 10000 RMB a month or thereabouts with an extra 4 hours privates a week then you can do that too - you have the free time to rake in the cash with privates.
As for the comment about teachers not coming over to China from Korea. You have got to remember this. If this recruiting frenzy carries on - I mean look, the Korean government are making it hard for you all as it is. Who is to say the next requirement they will implement is 'Linguistics/TESOL/Education graduates only to work in public schools' and then the rest of you have only got the hagwons to fight over and then you will see a decrease in benefits and working conditions.
Once upon a time - back in 1994 - all you needed to work in Taiwan was to be able to walk and talk at the same time and look at it now - In a space of 15 years, the market has gone from something like Korea to something like shit. If you don't want to tempt fate then I would stop making lofty assumptions about where you will and won't work - because in a couple of years - you might not have much of a choice. Especially if you don't have the relevant TESOL/education qualifications. |
