Why would you mistrust that individual's judgment if he acts in spite of those beliefs?

People don't normally act in spite of their beliefs. Those who do have a reason. With politicians, that reason is almost invariably, "I'll do whatever it takes to get into office and stay there." I'm not interested in throwing my support behind such a person.

Believing inane things like "The Earth is only a few thousand years old," in the first place demonstrates extremely poor judgment. Being willing to act against those beliefs in your policy positions doesn't demonstrate good judgment, it just demonstrates that said poor judgment is also coupled with a spineless lack of conviction that ensures the policies they support will just match what the latest media poll says they should.

I want a representative that believes what I believe, and who will remain steadfast in those beliefs even if they become unpopular. That requires conviction, and conviction requires genuine belief to fuel it.

Maybe. But not if the economy recovers within the next two years (which is likely).

You're ignoring a greater belief that has nothing to do with "a spineless lack of conviction;" separation of church and state. Many religious and anti-religious people out there hold a great deal of personal beliefs that they would never want to see enacted as legislation.

That is where the divorce between personal (in this case, religious) beliefs and political beliefs occur, and one does not have to inform the other.

I agree wholeheartedly with the second half of that, but the first I find incredibly distasteful. I only care for having a representative that shares the same political beliefs as I; all the rest is irrelevant.

Can we avoid this line of discussion? It's not likely to lead anywhere other than a locked thread.

You're right; articulating my case requires reference to religion, and that's going to get the thread locked. I PMed you my response so you don't think I'm just trying to dodge out of the discussion, but I won't post it here.

That's why I came to Korea following the '04 election.

Yes, it was a very disappointing election for me too. Once I realized that it was too late to register to vote where I was going to graduate school, I made a point of flying home just so I could vote, but Bush still won regardless.
