California Dreamin' is one of the best songs ever written. You don't hear classics being made like this anymore.

Best oldies rock song- House of the Rising Sun by The Animals. Well, they didn't write it, but whatever.

Runners-up- Duke of Earl by Gene Chandler and Run Around Sue by Dion & the Del Satins.

Best punk song- Warhead by UK Subs

Best metal song- too many to name

Best rap song- Diary of a Madman by Scarface

Best Wondergirls song- 2 Different Tears

Best Kesha song- her songs are so horrible, I think the best sounds that come from her are when she takes one of her drunken craps in a dirty-ass toilet.

For me personally

Every darned song on 'The songs of Leonard Cohen' his debut album.

The perfect lazy Sunday afternoon at home lying sleepily in bed in your Itaewon apt (alone or with a parmour) music.

I'm surpised by how many Dillon fans and Neil Young fans I meet in Korea who haven't even heard of our wonderful, wonderful Leonard.

'Oh I lit a thin green candle
to make you jealous of me
but the room just filled up with mosquitos
they heard that your body was free
and then I took the dust from a long sleepless night
and I put it in your little shoe
and then I confess that I tortured the dress that you wore for the world to look through...'

The Smiths compilation 'A hat full of hollow' is up there for me too.

Nick Cave's 'The Boatman's Call' also is full of stunning, hauntingly gorgeous songs.

This must be one of the best songs ever written - or at least one of the truest messages about life.

Here For a Good Time by Trooper

The lyrics are also easy for your students to understand, so use it in your lessons too.

Raise a Little Hell is also an inspirational song.

Everyone not talking about Bob Dylan, Tom Waits or Rush needs to take a long hard look at their lives.
