Hi,
I have just completed a masters in human rights, will I still have to do a tefl course...or will I get a job regardless...and how would it affect my pay?

Also, because I have the masters, someone mentioned that I may be able to get a University position...anyone know if thats true or how I would go about getting a job?
Cheers!

You never have to do a TEFL course, even without a masters.

Your credentials (with no classroom experience) put you about a 1/2 step above the next green as grass rookie and are virtually meaningless when you get into the classroom. You are still at the entry level when it comes to jobs.

You do NOT need a telf cert to get a job in Korea.

It all depends on what your long term plans are:

a) IF you are staying in EFL then get the best you can. (CELTA, SIT, Trinity).

b) IF you are looking at teaching at the post secondary level then you will need to get a MATESOL/linguistics/etc. (A non-related MA won't work except at the bottom end of the barrel).

c) If your plan is to find a job for a gap year or two and pay off some student loans then yes, get your on-line telf (it will give you some clue as to what you are doing when you get dropped into a classroom).

d) if you plan to ONLY work in Korea then your on-line tefl is worth about 100k per month raise in your salary.

e) Most other countries (employers) won't accept one as a credential (unless they are desperate). The standard to judge by is a 120 hour course with 6 hours of observed practicum with real students.
