So, as of lately I've found youtube streaming really slowly in Korea. I have a pretty fast connection at home, (like everyone else, I hope) and I've pulled down data at 1.4MBps. But, lately it's been chugging along, even at a low 360p resolution. It's even slow at school where I pull down up to 5MBps second on a regular basis. So, is anyone else experiencing this? It's really wrecking my American way of life here. |

youtube sucks in Korea. Nobody knows exactly why. Somebody is not getting along so there is limited bandwidth.
That's the basic conclusion of the previous 5 threads on this topic.
I connect through hotspot shield for faster service. It usually helps. However, torrents work at full speed! |

Ooooh. I never thought of that. Hotspot Shield helps me to log in on some sites I can't do normally. But it slows down my connection sometimes. I'll try that when I watch a lot of youtube.
Youtube slowing down started happening to me since May. Before that, I could watch eternally without problems and even on HQ/HD. Now, when I watch for a long time on youtube (ie ANTM one whole cycle), it slows down really frustratingly.
Good advise, I'll try it. |

I too can't enjoy surfing Youtube when I don't have a movie to watch despite the SK installation guy proving I have 80MB/s download speed when he installed it by using SK's speed test site. I used to just watch Youtube for the evening with cable internet, but in Korea, it's so S-L-O-W even though I can get up to 6MB/s on Utorrent when at least one of the seeders don't have it throttled down. It's stated you need 140kpbs to 1MB/s to watch in real time, but I have more times speed than that and Youtube still just stalls out. I still do searches, but I just let it load and watch later though much fewer videos due to it not being in real time. It takes 10 minutes for many videos to load and many others just time out and are unwatchable. All the video downloaders quit working on me a few months ago where it just saves as 0kb file size. |

Am I wrong in assuming it's because the YouTube servers are based in the US? I thought that was why all US sites ran slower than Korean-based sites, but it's just more noticeable for YouTube because you're loading video. |

Hard to say. But, it streamed perfectly before, I mean I used to stream HD quality off of youtube and it worked just fine. |

The mandatory Korean ads at the beginning have slowed it down for me lately. |

Mandatory ads at the start are part of almost every region now and not exclusive to Korea.
Youtube is fast in the morning. I can stream 1080p from my phone, hotspots and my home cable. Bandwidth clunks out at about 6pm onwards (I set up a script to test it).
Obviously, the cause is more people using the US-Korea undersea links in the evening. Welcome to the internet of the rest of the world, my North American friends. |

my guess is..
youtube has exploded in popularity here in korea. the servers cant keep up with demand. might explain why after midnight speeds improve. |

Are they even hosting in Korea? I can barely use it anymore since, even at 360p, I have to wait for it to download almost completely before I start. |

Just putting this out there.
I have no issues with Youtube at all. I watch about an hour's worth of stuff every night from home. It doesn't need to buffer unless I change it to HD. Even then I can watch it all after a 30 second buffer.
I think problems might be ISP related. I'm with KT by the way. |
