Anyone have any recommendations for an awesome place to stay in either Siem Reap or Phnom Penh?
For the first time in my traveling life I'm NOT looking for budget-at-all-costs and would like something decent with A/C.
I'm especially having trouble finding promising looking places in PP. |

Not quite sure if you are saying you want "cheap but good w/ AC" or "money is no object, i'm a baller" hotel but...
Along the river front there were quite a few very nice looking & expensive places to say. The one's that were closer in the direction of the Silver pagoda seemed to look a bit more expensive while the ones in the direction of PP night market looked more scaled down (not to be read as being bad)
Unfortunately when I was there I didn't stay on the river front. We stayed a few blocks into the city (about 10-15 minute walk to river). One place we stayed at the end of our trip was the Paradise Hotel (http://www.paradisehotel.com.kh/).
I think we bargained down to $22 a night. The staff I believe were Chinese but very friendly, had a security guard of sorts and free computer with internet (though very slow). Rooms were decent, had AC and had no complaints other than encountering (and destroying) a rogue cockroach. But lets be honest, its PP, what do you expect.
Hope that helps |

It does help! Thanks. Money is an object of course, but I'm not gunning for the dirt cheapest place this time around. I can splurge that extra five bucks for a real bed, you know? |

| What amenities are most important to you? WiFi connection, swimming pool, etc.? Location? Give some more specifics on what you are looking for, you will get more specific recommendations. |

| I stayed at the Hotel Indochine II in Phnom Penh. It's less than a minute walk to the riverfront and I was quite impressed. Good airconditioning, free internet, clean rooms. I got the small room (still not a bad size) for $10 a night down from $18. A great bargain I think. |

| Do most of the hotels do bookings for the Killing Fields and buses to Siem Reap and all that too? I ask because I've only ever stayed in dirt cheap backpacker geared hostels as opposed to the more standard hotel fare. |

Many of the hotels get a cut if they book tourists on a bus somewhere, so its pretty easy. What is more easy is to just go to the giant bus station and buy a ticket, kind of a hassle at times tho.
The hotel more than likely can arrange for someone to pick you up, drive you literally for 2 minutes and drop u off at the bus station with your ticket. It'll cost you a little more this way (+$1 or $2)
For the killing fields tour, just go walk outside. You'll get bum rushed by tuktuk drivers who will be offering you tours left and right. The ones that speak better english are near the waterfront. Don't forget to haggle. |

| Stay at the Mandalay Hotel in Siem Reap. It's about $10 for a decent room with an overhead fan. It's a big room building with a great restaurant! |

in siem reap, i stayed a couple nights at the garden village. right in the downtown area. paid $1/night for an outside dorm bed (with mosquito net). but there are plenty of rooms, some are hut-like. they're pretty cool inside!! $3/night and all necessities (bar/computers/etc). packed with people too so you can always get info/help. they're online.
phnom penh, stayed at the lake area. got a double-bed room for $4/night. good food, cheap beer and surrounded by places to go. but our beds didn't have a top sheet. think mine was the grandview on the lake but there are plenty to choose from.
depends on what kind of place you're looking to stay in though. considering how cheap they were, the rooms/facilities were clean in all the places. as for the tours, bargain and hire a moto-taxi or tuk-tuk. think we payed $2 for 3 people to the killing fields and s-21. in siem reap, we rode bikes to the sites we wanted to see or walked. |
