I am trying to leave my company due to their unethical and morally corrupt practice of taking advantage of everyone. I already know they will never go with me to immigration to cancel my visa. Is it true I can leave the country, simply hand in my certificate of registration card (this supposedly cancels my visa if I ask) and come back with a tourist visa? Seems to easy to be true. Any advice is appreciated.
I love this country and its people but public seems like the only way to go.

Yes, it is true. But you can't legally work again until you get another work visa -I was going to say E2 visa but that would be assuming you are in the same category as me.

Yes, the act of leaving the country and turning in your ARC effectively cancels your visa and residence privileges.

You may return as a tourist at your convenience (the same day even).

Do be aware that often a carrier (airline) will NOT let you board as a tourist (entry on arrival waiver stamp - not a real visa) without proof of funds and/or onward passage out of Korea again.

I'm in a similar situation. I want to leave and come back with a new E2. If I do not go to immigration with my employer, but only hand in my ARC at the airport, is there a chance that I cannot get a new visa until my old one runs out?

Immigration is not known for its consistency in much of anything, so there is a risk.

However, I, for one, have done this successfully.

Call the immigration office and ask. They speak English.

They'll definitely cancel your visa when you hand in your ARC at the airport. Whether or not they'll give you a new E2 right away is another question. I haven't heard of anyone being refused recently, but they used to have a rule (official rule? unofficial guideline?) that they wouldn't give you a new visa until at least 6 months of the original would have been expired anyway (used to be 9 months, and before that the whole 12 months). I don't mean to discourage you because I'd never recommend to anyone to stay at a bad job, but just keep it in mind. But first, call the immigration office to see what someone THERE thinks.

And sometimes they don't even care. My husband had his outbound flight ready to show if they asked, but they never did and he's not from a first world country either.
