 Posted: Tue Nov 23, 2010 5:03 pm Post subject: i got scolded by a western couple yesterday |

i went to emart on my scooter and i park it on the sidewalk in front of the emart where there also happens to be a bike path, so i ride on the bike path and pull over and park my scooter. there's a middle aged western couple walking toward me with their dog on a leash and as i'm setting the bike stand, i notice the couple stopped and is staring at me and the woman asks me "where's the road?" i look up and i do a "huh?"
btw, i'm asian so they probably thought i was korean. anyways, the husband repeats, "where's the road? you need to slow down" they sounded so damn snarky.
anyways, i did a quick "yessir" just to get them off my back and went on about my business and they walk away and the guys yells back "you're welcome"
this is where i'm kicking myself in the butt. i wish i could've had a better response. i wish i could've done something like smile and say "i'm fine thank you and you?" or a "englishee no!"
i wasn't even going that fast, it was 10pm at night and i was probably going 15mph on the bike path. i should've just said "eff off old man!" |

| You should told them to eff off and tell them it's none of their business. They probably said it assuming you were Korean and probably had racist undertones. |

| Or you could just not ride your scooter on the sidewalk since it's illegal. And yeah, I know Koreans do it. Doesn't make it right. |

yeah it's illegal, but everyone parks their bikes and scooters on that sidewalk.
the real point is that they were just smarmy as hell. "where's the road?" and she tried to ask in this fake nice tone of voice. if you want someone to be aware of something and for them to change it, you'd say it in a way that wasn't so condescending. you'd say it in a way that the other person would want to be receptive to what you're saying. seems like simple logic but a lot of people don't get it.
then the husband yelling "you're welcome" even though i never said thank you. that was weird. i guess he didn't know how to respond after i said "yessir." |

yes. it is also morally wrong to throw a brick blindly into a crowd of people, or to break a bottle in a children's playground. it is careless and shortsighted.
if somebody did this to me i would not get smarmy though, I would throw a rock at them. a scooter is not a bicycle. |

+1 on the eye-rolling.
The irony is that if a western teacher came on here and told a story about how he was criticized for riding his scooter on a sidewalk by Koreans and suggested there were "racist undertones" involved, we all know several posters would jump all over him. |

you would throw a rock at someone who is riding a scooter on the sidewalk? seriously? wow.
and you're comparing riding a scooter on a sidewalk to throwing a brick into a crowd of people? double wow. |

| Riding scooters on the sidewalk has to stop. You know it's wrong yet you follow the Korean example and do it anyway. I have a 3 year old and I don't know how many times a scooter has almost hit him. It's the sidewalk it's for walking, drive your scooter on the street. You may think you are being careful riding, going slow and what not, but there are always things out of your control and can happen out of the blue. Really what do you expect when you're breaking the law, and endangering the people around you. |

i understand your concern, and i don't usually ride on sidewalks. but in this case, i do because it's the only place to park my scooter in that area. it's the one in konkuk if any of you know which one i'm talking about.
and yes, i'm going to do it the korean way. i'm in korea. |
