I was refused a rural allowance, and I requested one. It got really unpleasant, and I was basically told to shut up and go away. I should have left then and there - but this is my last year - so I didn't. Still very annoyed. |

Wow. 2.5 hours of daily commute and not even a rural allowance.  |

I have 3 rural schools. My wife and I teach in the same city but my schools are in little towns which are under the cities jurisdiction.
Mon: (all girls MS) walk to bus stop+bus ride+walk to school= 35-45 mins one way
Tues: (Coed) Co-teach pics me up but I ride the bus home. Bus ride(s)+transfer waiting 40-1 hr
Wed: Lucky me, (teacher's classes in my city) walk to bus stop+bus ride 15 mins. Or 20 min bike ride from my place
Thur: (all boys MS in the same town as my Monday and Friday)walk to bus stop+bus ride+walk to school= 35-45 mins one way
Fri:(all girls MS) walk to bus stop+bus ride+walk to school= 35-45 mins one way
On Mon, Tues, Fri, I can leave school whne my teacher says which is around an hour or so before I should
I get no rural allowance but the leaving early is worth it.
My wife's school is 7 mins walk from our place. |

The POE said the Rural Allowance is not to pay for travelling.
There's a free school bus in the morning that gets me to work 40 mins early - so I include that 40 mins waiting-time in my commute. If I took a public bus in the am, it would arrive at school at the same time, but it would cost me bus fare.
I public bus home - and that includes a 25 min walk to the bus station, and then a wait on the bus. However, it gets worse, there's also a free school bus that leaves 15 mins before my 4.30pm knock off time - and my school won't let me leave early to catch it - even though I report for work 40 min early everyday. Serious Confucian control issues at work here.
Nevermind./ Only 93 days to go - never to return. |

Just 1 school! It's a big one, so I don't even get to see all of the students in a week.
I walk 15 minutes to work, but I could take a bus. But then I would have to wait for the bus, so I might as well walk. Plus, it saves about 2,000 won a day. 1 way there, 1 way back! I also enjoy walking. |

I teach in the country and am given a car to commute between various schools. I don't get a rural allowance because none of my schools are "rural enough." I do, however, get a travel allowance (gas money) for each school that I teach at. It takes minimum 15 minutes driving to get to my closest and max 30 to my furthest. Not bad.

My apartment is about 30 minutes (on foot) from my main school. I work there on Wed, Thurs, and Fri. My other school is only 10 minutes away (on foot).
Our district gives people cars if you work at multiple schools. My car just sits at home unless it's bitterly cold or raining.
It really is a crap shoot though. Some of the teachers here drive about 30 minutes to school. I don't think any of the teachers here work at multiple schools on the same day though. So the commute is really not that bad. Especially since no one here has to take a bus. |

I only teach at one school and it is a 5 minute walk from my apartment.
Some of the teachers in my town commute 5 days a week to their schools. |

Nothing great. Old Kia cars. But, they drive decent enough and I don't think anyone has had to do any repairs yet.
It's a good deal. You get a car. The school pays for insurance and gas. I guess it's their way of trying to keep the teachers out here happy. Many of the schools are in the middle of rice fields. They are very isolated. |

I was the only PS teacher on Geoje that got it and I had to wait until March, to receive my first payment. So they saved 600K. Both my VP and co-teacher rang the POE to confirm that I lived in the middle of nowhere.
I threatened to quit, I was the first western teacher at my 3 schools so that might have helped as well. It sucks that you'te not getting paid it with your commute |
