I was wondering if anyone could offer me any advice about what to do about this as I have never been in this situation before.
I am finished my contract in a couple of weeks and my boss is refusing to pay my airfare becasue I am transferring directly to another school.
It does state in my contract that at the end of my contract I will get a ticket.
The problem is, that I am being released 5 days early as they want the new teacher to start but, I am taking holidays at this time.
Do I have grounds to got to the korean justice board with this? |

what's the exact clause about airfare in your contract? Does it say you will get a return flight to your home country? |

if youre being released 5 days early, does that mean you didnt complete the full year of employment? dont be surprised if your boss also doesnt pay your severance. |

well yeah, Im worried about that too. But as I said, Im taking 5 days vacation as the last 5 days I should be there, that way they cant say I didnt complete the contract.
The contract states that the school will provide a round trip ticket on completion of contract.
They say if the teacher doesnt go straight home, they never give them tickets???
Problem is, I dont want to rock the boat incase I have to fight them for my severence etc too... |

Actually, they can say you didn't complete the contract if you begin another job without their (and Immigration's) permission prior to the end of the contract. It's irrelevant that you're taking your vacation dates at the end. |

contract finished 15th (9th with 5 working days vacation).
starting new contract - 18th, hence no time to fly out and back. Ill have to wait until christmas week for that.
But thanks for that really helpful comment ramen, its a shame you cant use redtube at school instead of filling up your days on here offering helpful advice. |

The standard response in the situation of someone who is moving on to another job in Korea after leaving the country is to pay out money for the unbought ticket.
If your contract clearly states that you will get return arifare, and if you are definitely completing the contract, then you are entitled to this.
My advice: search online for a one way ticket to where you came from for the day after your contract ends. Print the prices off and show them to your boss. Your boss should pay out the equivalent of the cheapest possible one way flight.
This has been done by many friends of mine and it has worked. Keep a level head. Don't raise your voice. Smile through out the discussion. You want to avoid having to escalate it to the labor board if you can. If the boss still won't budge, that will be your only option.
Good luck! |

This all depends on the wording in your contract. Some public school contracts, that don't have entrance and exit allowances, state that they will buy your plane ticket if you leave the country within 10 days of the contract end date. If you don't leave the country within that 10 day period, depending on the school, then they can legally choose to not give you anything. Look at your contract and see what it says. |

This sounds awfully similar to my current situation, as my "vacation" falls at the end of my contract as well. Can I ask if you are working at a chain of schools in Gwangju? If so, PM me. |

If he still refuses to pay for it tell him you want the ticket just to make him pay. Tell him you will go home for a few days and then come back yourself. He might decide it's easier to pay you something than to pay the full whack for the ticket.
If he doesn't want to give you the money insist on the ticket, even if you don't use it and don't get any money, it's going to pi$$ him off having to pay for a ticket he knows you will never use.
you could also buy a refundable ticket. and get the money back and not use it. |

I'd imagine the money is paid before getting on the flight, otherwise the employee would have to be in their home country before getting refunded.
I would like you to be my boss, you would give me a great opportunity to come in here and have a moan.
In fact you should open up your own hagwon purely on the basis to annoy them hell out of E2 visa holders and give some of us something to read about on Daves. |
