Shrooms aren't really a popular drug in the inner cities...
And not all drugs really are for "spiritual" purposes. They all have different effects on the user and users themselves will have varying experiences.
I have no belief on the "spiritual" value of drugs (or prayer, or meditation, or The Dude, etc), but I think your logic is wanting. |

Fine, it doesn't matter. They are a popular drug across the West, and yet wisdom has never been more lacking.

Naturally. And that proves that shrooms (or any other drug) aren't the key to wisdom, although under very specific conditions they may have some value as a heuristic. The key is always an inner orientation.

Those who use drugs for recreational purposes tend to get what they want. (Some supposed version of fun or enjoyment.)
Those who use drugs for spiritual purposes also tend to be satisfied with their experience. Whether this is due to the drugs bringing about a higher state of consciousness or merely a placebo affect I cannot say.
No one is saying that drugs themselves are the enlightenment, only that those who seek enlightenment (shamans and the like) find what they are looking for through the use of this specific hallucinogenic drug.
I think in many ways we agree, but I felt your earlier reductionist view was wanting. |

I've met many of these people. They're mostly new agers with no degree of achievement whatsoever. There are a few Crowleyans who are more serious.

Even in shamanic traditions, forcing a realization by drug use was considered degenerate. Mircea Eliade wrote extensively on this. Degenerate seekers may find what they're looking for, but that isn't a glowing recommendation.

My view hasn't changed since then. I was a little terse, maybe. |

| I've also heard that they grow in Jeju island. This can possibly explain why the ancient Chinese used to refer to these islands as "The Islands of Immortality". |
I'll keep my eye out for it. |
